SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team dropped the middle game of a three-game series with the Washington Huskies on Saturday night, 13-8, at Smith's Ballpark.
The Utes (25-12, 10-7 Pac-12) erased an 8-1 deficit in the eighth inning with a seven-spot to tie the score, but couldn't work the late magic a second time as the Huskies plated five runs in the ninth inning to decide the game.
Core Jackson was the catalyst for the Utah offense, powering a three-run opposite field home run in the eighth inning, his fourth of the season. It was part of a season-high four RBI for Jackson, who also doubled in the game and has hit safely in nine of Utah's last 10 games. He was one of five Utes to contribute multiple hits;
Tyler Quinn had a team-best 3-for-4 night.
Hunter Antillon,
Karson Bodily,
TJ Clarkson and Jackson all had doubles.
Merit Jones took the ball to start the game for Utah, making his ninth start of the season. Jones went five complete innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits while striking out seven Huskies.
Washington jumped out to a 7-0 advantage through the first six innings, splitting the first six runs in the second and fifth innings, before adding one more in the sixth inning.
The Utes put runners in scoring position in the first three innings but were unable to push anyone across the plate. Then in the home half of the sixth, the club began to chip away.
Matt Flaharty singled with one out and Antillon doubled into the right field corner to put runners at second and third. Jackson followed with an RBI ground out, cutting the deficit to 7-1.
Washington would get that run back in the eighth before the Utah bats exploded in the bottom of the inning. Four consecutive Utes recorded a hit to start the inning as Flaharty and Antillion each singled while Jackson followed with an opposite field homer onto the berm in left field, moving the score to 8-4. Clarkson then smacked the first pitch for a double and
Kai Roberts would single to right field and plate Clarkson. Suddenly the Utes trailed just 8-5 and still with nobody out.
Three batters later and after a Huskies pitching change, Quinn popped a two-out single to place runners on the corners.
Kaden Carpenter would also find a gap in the infield to drive in another run. Now trailing 8-6 with two outs and runners on first and second, Utah tied the game when Flaharty hit a fly ball that was dropped and allowed Quinn and pinch runner
Bruer Webster to score, leveling the game at 8-8.
Washington responded with five runs in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the visiting club.
The Utes threw four arms out of the bullpen as
Jackson Elder,
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola,
Bransen Kuehl and
Jaden Harris all entered in relief. Kuehl received the loss (2-1).
