SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball program completed a three-game sweep of UCLA on Sunday afternoon with a 12-7 victory vs. the Bruins at Smith's Ballpark.
With the win, Utah (29-13, 14-7 Pac-12) moves into a tie with Arizona for first place in the Pac-12 standings. It also secured a sweep over the Bruins for the first time in recorded program history.
Center fielder
Kai Roberts homered as part of a two-RBI day that also saw Roberts set program history. A stolen base in the fifth inning for Roberts was his 28
th of the year, breaking the single-season program record. It was previously shared by Casey Child and Scott Pratt, both of whom swiped 27 bags during the 1997 season.
Right fielder
TJ Clarkson led the team with a 3-for-4 performance, finishing a triple short of the cycle. He had two RBI and scored a season-high four runs. Designated hitter
Kaden Carpenter (2-for-5) had a homer of his own as well on a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Elsewhere in the lineup, catcher
Hunter Antillon had a pair of hits and scored twice to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games and on-base streak to 15 in a row. Carpenter's day pushed his hitting streak to eight games.
Tyler Quinn doubled during a 2-for-4 day, drove in two runs and scored once.
Colter McAnelly (4-2) picked up the win on the bump with a 5.2-inning start, striking out four Bruins against three runs on eight hits and a walk.
Jaden Harris,
Brett Porthan and
Randon Hostert all saw action out of the bullpen.
Utah broke the ice with a five-run first inning after McAnelly worked around a pair of singles in the top half. Roberts led off with a walk, before a
Karson Bodily single advanced Roberts to third.
Drake Digiorno then drove in a pair on a triple out to right field. Clarkson followed with a base hit to bring Digiorno home for the 3-0 lead.
Tyler Quinn and
Matt Flaharty then added hits to drive in runs and end the inning with a 5-0 Utah advantage.
Clarkson's two-out homer in the second inning landed on the right-field berm and gave the Utes a 6-0 lead.
The teams traded blows over the next two innings, each posting two in the third inning and one run apiece in the fourth to leave Utah with a 9-3 lead.
Clarkson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored when Carpenter clubbed the 2-1 pitch for a home run. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Roberts tucked one inside the right field foul pole to wrap up the team's scoring for the day.
Hostert's 1-2-3 ninth completed a series for the redshirt senior that saw two appearances totaling 5.2 innings of shutout ball. He allowed only two hits, walked none and struck out six batters combined between today's appearance and a 4.2-inning outing on Friday, picking up the win that night in extras.
