SALT LAKE CITY – The 2023-24 season has come to an end for the University of Utah women's basketball team, here's a look at the major highlights and accomplishments from the Utes this season.Â
OPENING TIP
The Utes finished the season 23-11 overall on the season and posted an 11-7 Pac-12 record. This was the third consecutive 20-win season and 32nd, 20-win season.Â
The No. 5 seeded Utes made their 20th NCAA Tournament appearance and third consecutive appearance where Utah picked up its third consecutive First Round win for the first time in school history.Â
SEASON ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Utah's 20th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third consecutive
- Utah's No. 5 Preseason Ranking is its highest preseason ranking in school history and the first time Utah has been ranked to start the season since 2005
- Ranked in the Top 25 in the entire season
- Utah had four wins over Top 10 teams, the most in a single season in school history.
- Utah's 74-68 win over No. 7 USC (Feb. 25) marks the highest ranked road win in program history.Â
- Utah's 91-84 overtime win over No. 2 UCLA (Jan. 22) marks the highest ranked win in program history.Â
- Utah women's basketball hit 1,000 program wins with its W over Oregon becoming the second Pac-12 school to hit the milestone. Second only to Stanford.Â
- Against South Carolina State (Nov. 9), Utah had 21 made three pointers breaking the school record for most threes in a game which was previously set at 19 (vs. Lipscomb Nov. 10, 2021).Â
- Broke the record for most assists in a single season with 660 on the year
- Tied the record for most 100 point games in a single season with five
- Third consecutive 20-win season (32nd, 20-win season in school history)
- Broke the record for most made three pointers in a single season with 348 this season
- Â Four Utes hit 1,000 points in career scoring in Dasia Young, Gianna Kneepkens, Jenna Johnson and Kennady McQueen
- Alissa Pili became the fastest Ute to score 1,000 points in just 48 games as well as hit 2,000 career points this season
UTAH IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Utah has a 12-20 overall record in the NCAA Tournament. This has been the first time Utah has made three consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearances since the 1988-89, 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons and was the first time in school history Utah picked up three consecutive first round wins. The 2024 NCAA Tournament marked Utah's 20th March Madness appearance. This was Utah's fifth time in school history going in with a No. 5 seeding.Â
Utah has made it to the Sweet 16 three times in school history, with only one appearance in the Elite Eight.
HEAD COACH LYNNE ROBERTS
Roberts concluded her ninth season at the helm of the Utes. She has posted a 162-115 record in her time at Utah. She led the Utes to three consecutive NCAA Appearances and three consecutive first round wins for the first time in school history. During the 2022-23 season, she was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year after leading the team to its first ever Pac-12 regular season title. She also led Utah to its second ever Sweet 16 appearance. Also in the 2022-23 season, Roberts led the Utes to its highest AP Rankings in school history, including 12 weeks in the Top 10. Â
SHARING IS CARING
The Utes finished the season No. 6 in the nation in assists per game with their 19.5 average. Utah has been sharing the ball this season, recording assists on 67.7 percent of all made field goals (660 of 974).Â
- Utah's 660 assists breaks the record for most assists in a single season. A record that stood since the 1980-81 season.Â
- Utah averaged 19.5 assists per game (No. 6 NCAA, No. 1 Pac-12).
- Utah posted 30 or more assists in four separate games this season with a season high against Alaska Anchorage where the Utes had 35 assists on 38 made field goals for a 92% completion rate. It's the best AST/FG percentage since 2000 vs. BYU.
- Utah's 35 assists against UAA is the second most assists in a single game in school history. The record of 36 assists was set in 1981 against UTEP.Â
- Ines Vieira had 14 assists against Alaska Anchorage, the second most assists in school history in a single game and a personal career high. The assist single game record (15) was set in 1981 where Holly Rawlings and Monica Starrett both accomplished the feat. Â
- Utah was led by Ines Vieira who had 200 assists on the year, (No. 13 NCAA, No. 1 Pac-12) assists this season and averages 5.8 per game (No. 14 NCAA, No. 1 Pac-12).Â
- Jenna Johnson posted a career-high nine assists in the 74-68 win over No. 7 USC.Â
FROM BEYOND THE ARC
The Utes broke two three point records this season. First Utah broke the record for most threes in a game after knocking down 21 against South Carolina State (Nov. 19) and then finished the season with 348 made threes for most threes in a single season.Â
- Utah ended the season No. 4 in the nation in made three pointers per game and led the Pac-12 with 10.2 made threes a game.Â
- The Utes finished at No. 23 in the nation in three point percentage sitting at 36.0%.Â
- Utah has hit eight or more threes in 125 games under the direction of Lynne Roberts, going 94-31 in those games. That total includes 24 games this season, in which Utah is 20-4
- Utah has hit 348 three pointers this season which is the highest in school history in a single season.Â
- The 21 three-pointers vs. South Carolina State broke the school record for most made three pointers in program history. The school record for made threes in a game was 19, set in 2021-22 vs. Lipscomb.Â
- Utah hit 10 or more threes in 17 different contests this season.Â
- Utah was led by Kennady McQueen who made 67 threes on the season shooting 38.7% from beyond the arc.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES FOR THE UTES
Utah had four Utes record double-doubles on the season.Â
- Alissa Pili recorded five double-doubles on the season to lead the Utes. Her most recent was 20 points and 11 rebounds against Arizona State (March 7). Her first double-double of the season came against South Carolina State where she dropped 18 points and 10 rebounds. She has six double-doubles as a Ute.Â
- Ines Vieira had an assist/point double-double when she dropped 10 points and a career-high 14 assists against Alaska Anchorage.Â
- Jenna Johnson had two double-doubles on the year and recorded her first double-double of the season with her 13 points and 10 rebounds against Weber State (Dec. 21). Johnson posted her second double-double of the season against Oregon with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She has six double-doubles for her career.Â
- Reese Ross had two double-doubles on the year. Her first career double-double against Alaska Anchorage where she dropped 20 points and 11 rebounds
1,000/2,000 POINT CLUBÂ
Utah has had five Utes joining the 1,000 point club in Alissa Pili, Gianna Kneepkens, Dasia Young, Jenna Johnson and Kennady McQueen.Â
- Pili currently has 1,370 points as a Ute and became the fastest Ute to reach 1,000 in just 48 games.Â
- Kneepkens breached 1,000 career points in 2023-24 when she put up 19 against Carroll College (Nov. 24).
- Young had 511 career points at UTM before coming to Utah where she's added 631 to her 1,142 career point total. She hit 1,000 career points when she put up 10 against Weber State (Dec. 21).Â
- Jenna Johnson broke into 1,000 career points against Oregon (Feb. 11) where she put up 20 points. She now sits at 1,054 career points.Â
- Utah had one more Ute sneak into 1,000 career points in Kennady McQueen. She hit 1,000 with her 11 points against Arizona State (March 6). She now has racked up 1,051 career points.
- Alissa Pili chipped away at 2,000 career points hitting the milestone after 121 games as an NCAA Division I women's basketball player.Â
- Pili posted 20 points against UCLA to push her over the 2k milestone.Â
- She ended her collegiate career with 2,130 career points.Â
- Pili hit 1,000 career points during the 2022-23 season. She put up 795 points in her time at USC and powered up in her debut season as Ute with 643 points in 2022-23.Â
PILI'S POWER
Pili led Utah this season averaging 21.4 points per game. She's posted a career-high 37 points twice this season both against Top 10 teams.Â
She was named to The Athletic's All-America Second Team as well as the All-America Third Team by AP, Sporting News and USBWA. She was named as a Wooden Award Final Top 15 finalist. She was also named a Katrina McClain Top 5 Finalist. She was named to the midseason team for the Naismith Trophy and the preseason watchlist for the WBCA Wade Trophy. Pili was placed No. 4 on the ESPN Top 25 Women's Basketball Players list.Â
She has posted five games this season scoring 30 or more points and 20 games recording 20 or more points. She ended the season shooting 55.0 percent from the field, 40.4 percent from the three and 82.0 percent from the free throw line.Â
Pili's career-high 37 points came first against No. 1 South Carolina (Dec. 10) and earned her ESPN, AP and USBWA Player of the Week. She also earned Pac-12 Player of the Week.Â
