Head Coach Gavin Petersen
Opening statement…
"You know, great to be back in the Huntsman Center after a couple weeks on the road at Montana and then Colorado State. I'm very proud of the way we responded coming out of practice Monday and then Tuesday. It's a tough time of the year with finals and the stress that is put on these young women. The team focused on the game plan and put together a good 40 minutes of basketball— and that's something I've been preaching to these guys is that we've got to put a full game together. If you were wondering what I told them what adjustment that helped them and it was simple… it was one word… It was 'decide.' When these young women decide they want to be THAT team, they can be…when they decide they want to go through the motions, they can be that team too. I'm going to be coaching them up whatever team they want to decide to be— I know the one I like coaching. I know the team that they like having fun together with— but it comes at a cost, you've got to be willing to be the tougher team, whether it's rebounding, setting screens, diving on loose balls. When we decided to do [those things] the game started opening up, we started to play freely and it was fun… So, extremely proud of the 40 minutes that they put together today."
On his confidence in LA Sneed (specifically moving her into the starting lineup)…
"We recruited LA from her sophomore year in high school and through the recruiting process we told her that she was going to be able to come here and play in the style of play that suits her. Why not Utah, right? It was just a matter of time before she felt comfortable, you know? She had some things she had to work through early in the preseason and she's worked past that and now she's ready to go. I have the utmost confidence in her and all our guards. I mean, they get put in the position to score, facilitate, and push the pace, and they're very capable of it and I believe in them 100%."
Senior Guard Lani White
On how her shot has developed as the season's progressed…
"I mean no shooter is perfect. I don't think Steph Curry started his [career] with 100% from the line. But I got in the gym, I had a conversation with Gavin and he said, 'you find your confidence in your reps.' I just got in the gym, I lived there for two weeks and I guess I figured it out. I'm going to carry that with me for the rest of the season."
On LA's confidence and mentality…
"LA is worker. I mean, when she buys in, she's unstoppable. So I want to give kudos to her because from game one to now, she's a different player in my opinion. Not many freshmen can do that. Not many freshmen can just turn it around in the middle of the season and be like 'I'm Utah's point guard and I'm going to push the ball'— that's hard to do. Major Kudos to LA."
Freshman Guard LA Sneed
On her confidence 10 games into her freshman season…
"I don't think the game's changed. I think my mentality starting off was really just nervous and I played that way and I feel like that's why my first games looked like that. I just told myself that my mentality needs to change, especially in practice, and that just helps me play the way I've been playing for the past two-three games."
