SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Women's Basketball team has been selected as a No. 8 seed and is set to take on No. 9 seed Indiana in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 21 at 11:30 AM (MT) in Columbia, S.C. The No. 1 Seed South Carolina is the host institution and will face No. 16 Seed Tennessee Tech.
The Utes earned a fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth for the second time in school history, and the first time since going to four in a row since the 1995, 1996, 1997 and1998 seasons. The Utes have been seeded at No. 8 four times in school history with the most recent time coming in 2008.
The Utes highest seeding in the NCAA Tournament was No. 2 and came during the 2023 season when the Utes advanced to their third Sweet Sixteen in school history.
"We've got a Big 10 team in the Indiana Hoosiers," remarked head coach Gavin Petersen. "They have a similar style of play to us. We both like to get up and down the court and keep the game fast paced. We're ready to showcase Utah basketball with the hustle and letting three pointers fly. Our seniors and their experience are going to help elevate us heading into the tournament."
This will be the Utes' 21st overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first under Petersen. In 2022-23, the second seeded Utes hosted the first and second rounds and advanced to the Sweet 16 in Greenville S.C. The highest the University of Utah had been seeded in the NCAA Tournament prior to 2022-23 was No. 5 and it happened in 1982-83, 1996-97, 2000-01, 2005-06, 2024-25.
The Utes earned this year's bid after collecting their 33rd, 20-win season in program history and fourth consecutive 20-win season and currently have an overall season record of 22-8. Utah finished the regular season receiving votes in the AP Top 25 Poll and ended the season at No. 26 in the NET rankings after spending the entire year in the top 25.
Indiana currently has a 19-12 overall record and finished at 11th in the Big 10. The Hoosiers picked up a win over Oregon in the Big 10 tournament before falling to USC. This will be the first meeting between Utah and Indiana in school history.
