Q&A With Utah Football’s Logan Fano

Native of Spanish Fork, Utah, gearing up for third season with Utes

SALT LAKE CITY — Season No. 3 with the Utah football program awaits defensive end Logan Fano and with the start of Spring practice last week, its another step in in preparation for the 2025 campaign—Utah's second as a member of the Big 12 Conference.

Fano, the brother of offensive lineman Spencer Fano, has appeared in 17 games at Utah over the past two seasons. After his first year was cut short by injury, Logan Fano was a consistent face at defensive end in all 12 games of 2024—earning nine starts along the way. He made 6.5 TFL on the season, ranking top-three on the team.

How does it feel to be back on the field with the start of Spring ball?
"It's good. We've had a lot of conversations about how things might go with a lot of potential in the defensive ends room. It's good to finally come out on the field and play some football."

As one of the older guys, can you describe the leadership role that comes with being one of the older guys on the team?
"It's weird for sure, because I still feel like I just got here. But it comes with playing a lot and being around the team for so long. It's been a good learning experience for me and something I feel like I've taken in stride. I try to do my best in that (leadership) capacity."

Overall results aside, what were some positives that the defense took away from last season?
"The fact that we never gave up. Every single game, every single week, we came in every day. We put our heads down and went to work. From the outside looking in, it probably looked like a down season. But to us, we die for each one of those 12 opportunities. We treated all of them the same way every single day."

Who are some guys in the defensive ends room that have brought energy to the group this offseason?
"The camaraderie in the room is awesome. It starts with guys like John Henry Daley, Paul Fitzgerald, Kash Dillon and Lance Holtzclaw. All those guys do a great job at making it fun to come in the building every single day. We hold each other to a high standard. Personally, I don't feel like I lived up to that standard last season. I'm trying to lift myself up to play at that standard and bring everybody else along too."

For guys that have moved on from the defensive line, what qualities did they show that now permeate through the rest of the group?
"Just following by example. Obviously, everyone saw the results on Saturdays with how they played. But it wasn't just Saturdays; every single day they treated football like they it to be their profession. To learn from guys like Van Fillinger, Junior Tafuna, Connor O'Toole and Jonah Elliss, it meant a lot for me in my development."

What are some facets of your game you'd like to grow this Spring?
"I'd like to get back to being a prolific pass rusher. Everybody wants to be like that, but I really feel like I have a lot of potential in that part of the game. With my knees back and stronger—I feel great right now—I think that's the next step for me."
