HOUSTON – The Utah women's basketball team bounced back with a 71-61 win over Houston Saturday afternoon.
Utah is now 14-5 overall on the season and 5-2 in Big 12 play. Lani White led the Utes with 19 points including four made from beyond the arc. Avery Hjelmstad had 14 points for the Utes and led Utah with a career-high eight rebounds.
GAME SUMMARY Utah started the game off with a made three ball from Lani White. The Cougars pushed out for a 10-7 lead but the Utes answered with an 11-1 run to take an 18-11 lead. As the initial quarter of play ended the Utes maintained a 20-13 lead. White ended the quarter with three made from beyond the arc.
The Utes came out of the quarter break on a 6-0 run setting the tone for the rest of the quarter. Utah dominated the second quarter and outscored Houston 22-8. Utah went into the halftime break with a 42-21 lead.
Houston came out of the break with some momentum and held Utah to just 10 points in the third quarter while putting up 19 for themselves. Utah was still able to hold onto a 52-40 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Utah started the fourth quarter with control going on an 8-3 run. Houston pushed to bring the score back within just 10 points but the Utes persevered and continued to charge to pull out the 71-61 victory over Houston.
LEADERS Utah had two Utes score in double figures and were led by Lani White's 19 points including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Avery Hjelmstad posted 14 points including four made from beyond the arc. LA Sneed and Evelina Otto had effective games on the score board with nine points each.
Hjelmstad led the Utes on the boards with a career-high eight rebounds. Brooke Walker also had a big night on the boards adding six for the Utes. Sneed and Maty Wilke each added four assists to help out the Utes offensive efforts,
COMPARISON Utah shot 47.3% from the field while Houston shot 33.3%. Utah went 39.3% from three knocking down 11-of-28 while Houston shot 26.3% going 5-of-19. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 80.0% going 8-of-10 while Houston shot 82.7% converting 14-of-17.
The Utes narrowly outrebounded the Cougars 37 to 35. Utah had 28 points in the paint to Houston's 18.
UP NEXT Utah will return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center to take on Texas Tech on Jan. 24 before taking on West Virginia Jan. 27. The Utes won't travel far for the next road game heading just south to Provo to take on rival BYU Jan. 31.
