SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team closed out its four-game series vs. Grand Canyon with a 7-2 victory on Monday to secure a sweep on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
Â
Utah continued its momentum at home behind a great overall performance offensively, defensively and on the mound. Seven players contributed at least one hit, including each of the top four spots in the lineup.
Daniel Arambula led the way with a 3-for-5 performance—his second three-hit game of the series—while scoring a run and driving in another.
Cameron Gurney powered the offense with a home run and four RBIs, while
Luke Jacobs doubled as part of a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs, a walk and run scored.
Â
Meanwhile, it was another solid day on the mound and in the field as the Utes held GCU to two runs and six hits, while walking just two Lopes on the day. GCU's two runs scored in the second inning are the only tallies surrendered by the Utes in the team's last 41 innings.
Â
It was a staff day on the mound for the Utes as eight arms saw action.
Anson McGorman (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win with a 1-2-3 third inning, while the quartet of
Landon Salvesen,
David Galindo,
Sammy Cova and
Dillon Fine combined for a perfect final four innings.
Â
Utah struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Gurney delivered a single that brought home
Jake Long to give the Utes an early 1–0 lead.
Â
Grand Canyon answered in the second inning with two runs to briefly take a 2–1 advantage, but Utah quickly responded. The Utes reclaimed the lead in the third inning, plating two runs to move ahead 3–2. Arambula reached with an infield single, then Gurney swung momentum back into the Utah dugout with a 407-foot home run over the left field wall. It was his second big fly of the season.
Â
The game turned in the sixth inning when Utah broke things open with a three-run frame. Jacobs doubled down the left field line, allowed
Matt Flaharty to score from second base. Long was put on with an intentional walk to load the bases, then after a GCU pitching change Arambula squibbed one toward shortstop for an infield RBI single. Hawkins scored on the play, then Gurney battled through seven pitches for a bases-loaded walk to bring Jacobs home.
Â
Utah added another insurance run in the seventh inning to cap the scoring at 7–2 while the bullpen continued to hold the Lopes scoreless down the stretch.
