SAN JOSE, Calif. - Kristina Andersen scored a career-high 17 points and equaled a career-best mark with nine rebounds to lead the Utah Utes to a 74-50 win over San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division match-up on Thursday night at The Events Center. Andersen shot 5-for-11 from the field to lead three Utes in double-figures. She also pulled down six offensive boards in 27 minutes.
Erin Gibbons, still nursing a pulled groin, came off the bench to make 4-of-7 three-pointers and score 16 points. Lauren Beckman, also coming off the bench, made 4-of-6 field goals and got 10 points.
Lori Red led the Utes with four assists and had nine points. Tiana Fuertes, Kristi Rose and Lindsay Sodja each contributed six points. Ayana Smith led San Jose State with 14 points and five boards.
Utah posted its third consecutive win improving to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in WAC play. San Jose State suffered its 12th straight loss to fall to 2-15 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The Utes shot 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from three-point range in the second half until making just one field goal in the final 5:23. Utah shot 39.3 percent from the field for the game and made 10-of-27 three-pointers, including 6-of-13 in the first half. The Utes had a 12 to 21 advantage in turnovers and a 40 to 33 edge on the boards.
"We shot them out of the zone early on, and from there I felt like it was really our game," said Ute head coach Elaine Elliott. "Our post game improved from there and was effective. I thought that we played really well in spurts, but once we got up we kind of lost our intensity at times."
Leading 8-6 with 14:30 to play in the first half, Utah reeled off a 19-2 run over the next six minutes. A barrage of long-range bombs jump-started the run, with Gibbons bookending a three-pointer by Andersen with two of her own on successive possessions.
San Jose State trimmed the Utah lead to 10 points twice with under a minute remaining in the first half before Fuertes swished in a three as the first-half buzzer sounded to put the Utes up 41-28 after 20 minutes of action.
Utah opened the second half with a 10-2 run in the first four minutes and built the lead to 21. Andersen hit a three to open the half and converted a three-point play just under three minutes in.
