Utah To Be First-Ever MWC Women's Basketball Champion

Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team ended their regular season with a season-high 92-42 win over the Air Force Falcons on Sat. Mar. 4, in Salt Lake City. Utah improves to 20-7 overall, 11-3 in the MWC. Air Force falls to 4-23 overall, 1-13 in the MWC.
Sophomore Lauren Beckman led the Utes with 17 points and five rebounds. Senior Janna Whitman ended her career, scoring a career-high 13 points and five assists. Whitman was 5-of-12 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range. Junior Kristina Andersen had 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Whitney Sutak had a career-high 11 points, making 3-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Lindsay Herbert led the Utes with a career-high 10 rebounds and six points. Senior Tiana Fuertes ended her career with six assists in the game. Utah used the depth of its bench as all 13 Ute players saw action. As a team, Utah shot 49 percent from the field (33-of-67), 38 percent from behind the arc (6-of-16) and 67 percent (20-of-30) from the free-throw line.
For the Falcons, Megan Thiedman led the team with 12 points, making 3-of-9 from the field, 2-of-8 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Teammate Rozalyn Russ had nine points, while Mollie Peters had eight points. Samantha Clifton and Wendy Stillman led the team with four boards each. Air Force shot 21 percent from the field (11-of-52), 23 percent from the 3-point line (5-of-22) and 71 percent from the free-throw line (15-of-21).
"Its nice to have this day to enjoy as a whole. It is always hard when there are so many expectations and sometimes you don't get to really enjoy some of the things that happen along the way. This is great for the kids, it was a good win and we're finally glad to be home to celebrate like this," said Elliott.
AFTER THIS: The Utes will compete for the inaugural MWC championship Wed.-Sat., Mar. 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nev. Game times are TBA.
