The quarterback situation was not resolved after Saturday's scrimmage--a 101-play affair at the McCarthey Practice Fields that featured highlights from all three starting contenders. Junior Brian Johnson showed no sign of his off-season knee surgery, completing 6-of-8 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown on his very first series. He also led all rushers with 43 yards. Junior Tommy Grady was 7-of-11 for 111 yards and 2 TDs and senior Brett Ratliff finished strong in a 5-of-9, 72-yard (1 TD) performance. None of the three threw an interception ... Half of the days remaining training camp will consist of double day practices, starting Monday, Aug. 14 ... Practices and scrimmages are closed to the public ... The Utes will conduct their second closed scrimmage of the camp this Thursday in Rice-Eccles Stadium ... Individual tickets for all home games, including the BYU game on Nov. 25, go on sale Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. Road games are also on sale. Utah has already sold over 4,000 tickets to the season-opener at UCLA.CAMP NOTES
Three walk-ons were awarded scholarships in the first week of camp: wide receivers Bradon Godfrey and Ameen Shaheen, and linebacker Matt Martinez. Both Godfrey and Martinez are on the current depth chart ... The Utes are down two scholarship players after the first week. Senior offensive lineman Eric Pettit is still plagued by the back problems that forced him to miss spring ball, and since he has already earned a degree (sociology), he made the decision to retire from the sport. Freshman running back George Molifua is out indefinitely due to medical reasons. His future playing status has not yet been determined ... Highly-touted juco defensive lineman Aaron Tonga reported to camp on Saturday after completing some academic coursework ... Two true freshman linebackers have moved onto the depth chart: Martinez is No. 3 at "mac" and Stevenson Sylvester is the backup at rover. Martinez and Loma Olevao are getting most of the reps in the middle while starter Joe Jiannoni continues to heal from off-season foot surgery ... Junior receiver Brian Hernandez missed two days of practice, including Saturday's scrimmage, to attend his grandfather's funeral.BREAKING NEWS
Injuries struck at Monday morning's practice, although their potential effects on the depth chart are relatively minor. Stud linebacker Kyle Brady (right knee sprain) is the most) is out until further notice, leaving most of the reps to co-starter Malakai Mokofisi. Sliding into the backup spot will be Loma Olevao, currently also the backup in the middle. Other injuries were to first-year sophomore Nano Tonga (right knee sprain), backup free safety John Peel (neck/back) and backup cornerback Mombroso Washington (shoulder). Washington should return to full practice this week, while the other two are out until further notice.A HOT TICKET
The University of Utah has already set a school record for season ticket sales. The 22,050 season tickets sold as of Aug. 9 broke the old school mark of 21,540, set last year. Even with the record-setting advance sales, season tickets are still available in every section and can be purchased by phone (801-581-UTIX), online (www.utahtickets.com) and at the Rice-Eccles Stadium box office. Individual tickets for all home games, including the BYU game on Nov. 25, go on sale Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. The current season ticket total means Utah's season ticket sales have climbed by over 6,000 since 2001's mark of 15,809. Season tickets since 2001 include sales of 17,049 in 2002, 16,147 in 2003 and 19,555 in 2004.
