FRESNO, Calif. - Leilani Mitchell dished out a school-record 18 assists, and had a double-double with 16 points in guiding the University of Utah women's basketball team (5-2 overall) to an 82-58 win over Fresno State here at the Save Mart Center today. It is Utah's fourth straight win.
Mitchell tied the school mark in the first half, handing out 15 assists on Utah's 21 first-half makes. The team shot a stifling 60 percent (21-for-35) from the floor in the first 20 minutes. As a result, Utah raced out to a 51-30 lead at halftime, and it cruised to the 24-point victory. The Bulldogs fall to 0-5 overall.
The old Utah single-game assist mark stood for 25 years. Monica Starrett was the last to set the mark with a 15-assist game back in the 1981-82 season. Mitchell's 18 helpers were also a floor record at the Save Mart Center.
However, it wasn't all Mitchell for Utah. All five starters recorded double-figure scoring numbers as the team finished shooting 56.1 percent (32-for-57) for the game. It was led by Morgan Warburton and Mitchell. Both had a team-best 16 points; Mitchell on 6-for-9 shooting and Warburton on 7-for-14.
Kalee Whipple recorded her third straight double-double with a 14-point, 10-rebound night. She also dished out five assists. The post players of Katie King and Jessica Perry added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Cydney Knight led all bench players with five points.
Utah held the slim 31-30 advantage on the boards, and it limited FSU to a meager 34 percent (18-for-53) shooting. Whipple's 10 boards were a game-high.
Tierre Wilson led all scorers with 19 points for the Bulldogs. Hayley Munro's seven boards also led the home team.
The Utes missed their first three shots of the game, but Whipple eventually found a wide-open Perry under the basket for the first points of the contest. That started the Utes on a six-point surge as they held a 6-0 lead in the game's first three minutes. Utah bumped its lead up to eight, 10-2, with 16:35 left in the half, and Knight's trey with 13:00 left in the half saw Utah's lead reach double-digits for the first time in the game, 19-7.
FSU had Utah's lead down to eight points, 24-16, with 9:33 to go. But, Utah poured it on, and it went on a 16-5 run to take the commanding 19-point lead. The Utes, at that point, owned the 40-21 lead and it cruised to the 21-point halftime cushion.
The visitors maintained control of the game throughout the second half as FSU never got any closer than 17 points. The Utes shot 50 percent (11-for-22) in the second stanza and saw their lead swell to as much as 26 points, 82-56, late in the game.
