RENO, Nev. - Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski just missed her third double-double of the season with 18 points and nine rebounds, but the University of Utah women's basketball team fell in a 58-50 decision to Portland in the third game of the Nugget Classic Saturday at the Lawlor Events Center.
Utah (1-4) held a 20-2 edge in points off turnovers over Portland as the Utes committed only five turnovers in the contest, compared to 18 for the Pilots.
Wicijowski turned in her third double-figure point game with 18, including a 7-for-19 afternoon at the free throw line and her sixth career 3-point field goal. She also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go with an assist.
Junior point guard Danielle Rodriguez dished out a season-high five assists to go with a season-high eight points. She also gathered five rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore Paige Crozon turned in seven points along with four rebounds, while senior guard Cheyenne Wilson connected on a pair of 3-point field goals for six points. Freshman forward Tanaeya Boclair added four points with a rebounds and an assist.
Junior guard Valerie Nawahine made her first appearance of season and scored her first career points, finishing with five points and an assist. Freshman forward Jada Matthews also registered the first points of her career with a lay-in.
Portland jumped out to a 7-0 lead before a pair of Wicijowski post moves and a pair of Boclair free throws lifted the lid on basket and brought the Utes back to within three (7-4). The Pilots were able to work out to an 11-point lead (18-7) after an 11-1 run that was snapped by a Wilson 3-pointer. Utah closed the half with a 15-6 stretch, including six points by Rodriguez, to pull within two (27-25) heading into the locker room. Wicijowski paced the Ute offense with 11 points to go with a team-high four rebounds, while Rodriguez set a new career high with eight points to go with two assists in the first half alone.
Matthews spun to the basket for a lay-in, her first career points to open Utah's scoring in the second half and bring the Utes back within three (30-27). Rodriguez then came up with a steal and found Nawahine in transition with a behind-the-back pass for a lay-in before Nawahine fed Boclair with a nice entry pass to tie the game for the first time at 32 points apiece. The lead would change hands eight times (since 15:38) but a layup and jumper by Crozon and Nawahine jumper gave the Utes a 46-43 edge after a 6-0 run. The game would be tied two more times, the last coming at 49-49, before Portland scored nine of the last 10 points to come away with the 58-50 victory.
Portland (1-4) was led by a 20-point, nine-rebound effort by Cassandra Brown.
