GUARDS
Utah's tempo will be dictated by senior point guard Danielle Rodriguez, who will orchestrate the Utah attack. Rodriguez has started 95 career games for the Utes.
"Our point guard's job is to get the ball up the floor as quickly as possible," Utah first-year head coach Lynne Roberts said. "A pass is a lot quicker than a dribble so if we can pass it up and advance the ball then we'll do it."
Rodriguez's 316 career assists is 10th in school history and career 38.3 3-point shooting percentage would be fifth in school history, but is just 22 attempts shy of qualifying.
"I wish I could coach her for more than one year," Roberts said. "She is my type of point guard. She plays hard. She goes fast. She does what you ask. She wants to win. She wants to do things right. I want this to be a really fun season for her."
True freshman Erika Bean, a product of Sacramento, Calif., will be counted on to supply depth at each guard spot for the Utes in 2015-16.
"Erika has a good understanding of the game as a point guard," Roberts said. "She'll be learning from Danielle Rodriguez this year. She's still figuring out this level, but she's doing a nice job. She has a smaller frame, but she's getting a little bit bigger and stronger. She understands the game. She can get to the rim and rebounds really well for a point guard."
Gabrielle Bowie will also compete for playing time as the defensive specialist among Utah's trio of point guards.
"Gabbi is an explosive athlete," Roberts said. "Her signature in terms of her impact is going to be on the defensive end. She can make things miserable for a ball-handler. Obviously, we will continue to develop her offensive skills, but will coach her into taking pride in being that defensive player who people hate to see guarding them."
