LOS ANGELES – Utah suffered its first loss of the season Friday night, falling 67-56 on the road to No. 10 UCLA to open Pac-12 Conference play at Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion.
"We hadn't played anyone of Pac-12 caliber yet this season and we opened with the No. 10 team in the country," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "This was a hard game for us and a true learning experience. We knew it was going to be tough and it was. We made some good adjustments in the second half and I'm proud of the team for that."
The Utes entered Pac-12 action with a perfect 11-0 mark on the season and new they had a tough feat with one of the top programs in the NCAA.
"They may have been a little more prepared than us because their nonconference schedule was tougher than ours. UCLA played at Baylor and at South Carolina, both top 25 programs, so I think they were a little more Pac-12-ready. Our schedule was done by design so we could build some momentum and we'll learn from this game," Roberts said.
Junior forward
Emily Potter scored a team-high 20 points for her seventh consecutive double-figure scoring game and 11th of the season. The 6-6 Canadian missed her first two shot attempts, but finished the first quarter 3-of-5 from the floor.
"This was a good game to start us off and open our eyes," Potter said. "We're here. We're playing. Opening with the team that's picked to win the Pac-12. I hate to learn from losing. I wish we could have that first quarter back, but we'll learn from it."
Sophomore
Erika Bean tied her career-high of 10 points while dishing out 10 assists for her first career double-double. The 5-8 point guard also led the Utes with eight rebounds as the second-leading rebounder on the team, averaging 5.1 boards per game.
Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair finished in double figures for the fourth straight game scoring 10 points for the Utes, while adding three steals.
Utah (11-1, 0-1 Pac-12) won the tip and a junior wing
Malia Nawahine knocked down a 3-pointer to take an early lead over UCLA (10-2, 1-0 Pac-12). The Bruins would go on an 11-2 run to take a 13-7 advantage at the first media timeout. UCLA would lead by as many as 10 points before finishing the first quarter up 19-11.
The Utes went on a 3-minute scoring drought midway through the second quarter, allowing UCLA to extend its lead. Buckets from Bean, Boclair and Jacobs late in the period cut into the Bruins' edge, but the Utes were down 38-24 at the break. Utah was shooting 30 percent with 12 turnovers heading into the locker room.
Back-to-back baskets from Bean and Potter early in the third quarter gave the Utes some momentum, but the Bruins regained control behind UCLA's Jordin Canada. Utah found the bottom of the net for 18 points in the fourth quarter, but the push came too late as UCLA claimed the game, 67-56.
"We only play them once because of how the schedule works so if we see them again it will be in the Pac-12 Tournament," Roberts stated about potentially facing the Bruins again this season.
The Utes return to the court across town Sunday to take on USC at 1 p.m. MT in hopes of evening their Pac-12 Conference record.
