FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – After a hard fought battle in the fourth and final round of qualifying at the ITF Futures, Utah sophomore David Micevski fell 6-3, 7-6(6) to Keegan Smith.
"It was a tough loss," said Micevski. "Overall it was a good quality match, but little things decided the winner. I felt that my first serve percentage was not on a high level and Keegan served very well."
Micevski started the day slowly, dropping his second service game of the first set and was unable to recuperate from it, losing 3-6. But the tables were turned in the second set, when Micevski broke early and took a 4-1 lead.
Smith was able to fight his way back to even things 4-4 and both players managed to hold serve a couple of times before heading to a tiebreak. In the breaker, the Ute served for the set at 6-5, but didn't manage to capitalize on his lead and lost the next three points to drop the match.
Micevski will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday to compete in the All-American Championships qualifying draw. He will join teammates Parker McGuiness, Egbert Weverink and Joe Woolley who will compete in the pre-qualifying draw.
