SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah women's basketball snapped a three-game losing streak with a 58-53 win over Colorado Saturday afternoon inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (14-7, 3-7) featured a new lineup with the two freshmen making their starting lineup debut. Freshman point guard
Kiana Moore and freshman wing
Megan Jacobs joined senior wing
Paige Crozon, junior forward Emily potter and junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair to start the game.
"We put in a new lineup just to mix it up," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "It's just a different look. Yeah, I'm happy with it, but I need to look at film too to see how it really worked.
Megan Jacobs got in foul trouble so she was limited to eleven minutes, but she was effective when she was in there.
Kiana Moore did a nice job when she was in there and defensively, she created some stuff in that third quarter, particularly."
Potter led both team with 16 points while pulling down 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
"She was 8-10, that tells you she is not taking bad shots. She is being efficient. She had six offensive boards, which is a sign of determination. It's not like she is alone in there. She always had three black jerseys around and she was able to pull down six offensive boards. I think she created two jump balls from offensive boards. Those don't go on stats, but those show determination," Roberts said.
Boclair was back in action for the Utes after sitting out one game, scoring 10 points and grabbing six rebounds. Junior wing
Malia Nawahine came off the bench for the Utes scoring 13 points while dishing out three assists.
Despite struggling from the floor early, Utah used a third quarter push, outscoring the Buffs 20-13, to claim the lead. Colorado came back in the fourth quarter, but Utah hung on shooting 41 percent on the game for its third Pac-12 Conference win of the season.
"This league is brutal. It is just a meat grinder of a league and every game is tough," Roberts stated. "I think everybody knows each other's personnel, and everybody is well coached. It's tough. You have to pick yourself up week after week, just keep going at it. Wednesday, stung. That loss stung. I am proud of our team for bouncing back and playing with a lot of energy."
Utah won the tipoff, but was unable to take advantage of the first possession as Colorado (12-9, 2-8) was the first on the board scoring one free-throw. After nearly two minutes of scoreless action for the Utes, Potter scored a field goal for a 2-1 lead. Both teams struggled on the offensive end of the floor as the score was tied 3-3 at the first media timeout on 14 percent shooting.
Out of the timeout, junior wing
Wendy Anae scored a layup and had a tipped ball at the other end and scored another layup to push the Utes out to a 7-3 lead. Utah missed its first six field goal attempts allowing Colorado to opened the final quarter with an 8-0 run to climb out to a 49-45 lead over the Utes before Nawahine connected on a 3-pointer to come within one for Utah.
Utah reclaimed the lead, 50-49, on a basket from Potter and continued to score including a 3-pointer from Crozon in front of the Utah bench for a 55-49 lead. Colorado made it a one possession game on an and-one opportunity, 55-52. With 38 second on the clock, Colorado went to the foul line, making the first shot as sophomore guard
