SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program posted a 90-31 victory over the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Friday afternoon, improving to 4-1 on the season.
Utah shot 59-percent from the floor while holding the Cardinals to just 18-percent shooting in the game. It is the first time this season and the 63rd time in program history that the Utes have held an opponent to under 40 points.
"We had balanced minutes and we got some players in double digits, which was great," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We were running up and down the floor and shot the ball really well."
The Utes were led by senior
Emily Potter who scored 21 points, adding seven rebounds and a season-high four blocks.
Daneesha Provo had a career-day with 19 points, shooting 5-for-6 from the arc with Kiana Moore also adding a career-high 14 points.
"We only had seven assists at halftime, and we talked about making the adjustment of not trying to do too much," Roberts said. "We wanted to settle down and execute a little bit better in the second half, and we did that which shows the progress of this team."
Utah's defensive stinginess became evident early in the game when they held the Cardinal scoreless for over seven minutes of the first quarter, taking a 14-4 lead. UIW was just 2-of-11 in the quarter while Utah shot 50-percent from the arc with six players getting at least a point for a balanced offensive attack.
Potter scored nine of her 21 points in the second quarter as the Utes continued to press the Cardinal, holding them scoreless for the final 5:41 to head into halftime up 41-12. Three of Potter's four blocks also came in the second quarter with Utah only allowing two made field goals before heading into the locker room.
The Utes started the third quarter on a 22-0 run that started in the second quarter, capped off by a three-pointer from Tilar Clark at the 7:21 mark to make it 48-12. The Cardinal shot just 11-percent from the field in the third, allowing Utah to take a 35-point lead into the final quarter of the game.
It was the same story, different quarter as Provo shot lights out in the final period, going 4-for-5 from the three with Moore also scoring nine of her 14 points in the fourth. The Utes outrebounded the Cardinal 15-2 in the final quarter, coming away with the fourth win of the season.
Utah will return to action on Monday, Nov. 27 when they host UT-Arlington at 6 p.m. MT.
