SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men's tennis plays its first home matches of the spring season this Friday and Sunday at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes will match against Montana State (0-0) at 12 p.m. on Friday, followed by a match against Weber State (1-0) at 5 p.m. that evening. On Sunday, the Utes face Utah State (2-0) at 12 p.m., and then will end the day against Idaho State (0-1) at 5 p.m. to finish off the weekend.
"After a long fall semester, we are eager to get the season underway," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "We have a great schedule this year, so we have to play our best tennis from start to end this season, kicking off with these 4 excellent opponents."
Utah Notes
The Utah men's tennis team look to continue their success from their fall competitions. In October, the Utes were able to capture four titles at the Utah Intercollegiate.
Slava Shainyan won the "A" flight singles title with newcomer
Randy Cory capturing the "C" flight. The two Utes also combined to win the "B" flight doubles crown with Joe Wooley and
Egbert Weverink capturing the "A" flight doubles title.
Weverink was also able to win the ITA singles crown, wining six matches in a row after dropping his opener in the main draw. The senior from the Netherlands won four matches in straight sets, and the first set in a fifth where his opponent eventually retired.
Opponent Notes
This will be Montana State's first match of the spring season. Last year, the Bobcats posted an overall record of 7-15, losing in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament to Sacramento State, with a score of 1-4. When Utah faced off against Montana State last season, the Utes escaped with a 4-0 win, with Weverink,
Dan Little, Wooley and
David Micevski all winning in straight sets in singles as the Utes concluded play.
Last weekend, Weber State opened their season with a 5-2 win over Southern Utah University, starting off the season 1-0. Last season, the Wildcats finished with an overall record of 8-12, going 5-6 in conference play. The last time these two teams met, the Utes cruised to a 7-0 victory. In that match, Utah took an early edge in doubles play with Slava Shaniyan and
Parker McGuiness picking up a 6-2 at the No. 3 position.
Santiago Sierra and
Egbert Weverink were victorious at the No. 2 spot, 7-5 to secure the point for the Utes. In singles action,
Joe Woolley was dominant at the No. 5 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1. Shaniyan put the Utes on the verge of victory with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 spot.
Dan Little closed things out for the home side with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.
Utah State has opened their season with a 2-0 record. Over the past weekend, the Aggies were able to defeat both Southern Utah University and Idaho State with a score of 7-0 against both teams. Last season, Utah State finished with an overall record of 23-9, going 6-1 in conference play. This record led the Aggies to a Mountain West Conference title, defeating UNLV in the conference championship with a final score of 4-0. After that accomplishment, they then moved on the NCAA tournament, where they fell short to Northwestern in the first round with a final score of 4-2.
Idaho State opened up their season with an 0-7 loss against Utah State, giving them an 0-1 start. Last season, the Bengals posted a 12-9 record, going 7-4 in conference play. This record led them to the Big Sky championship, where they fell short to the University of Montana with a final score of 0-4. The last time these two teams met, the Utes shut out the Bengals with a victory of 7-0. In singles play, the Utes were not tested as all six matches were decided in straight sets.
Azat Hankuliyev, McGuiness and Weverink sealed the overall victory for Utah at singles positions two, five and six before the other matches concluded.
