SALT LAKE CITY – It was another high scoring affair for the Utah women's basketball team on Monday night, finishing with an 89-62 win over Seattle U. The Utes improved to 6-0 on the season.
The Utes scored 24 points off turnovers while only committing eight turnovers themselves, also finishing the game with a season-high tying 14 steals. Utah shot 55-percent from the floor, the second straight game shooting 50-percent or higher, with
Daneesha Provo and
Megan Huff both hitting the 20-point mark.
"It wasn't perfect, but it was a good win," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We were really working it around to give up a three and get a great layup instead. We only had three turnovers in the first half and I felt like the movement and passing was really good tonight."
Provo led the Utes with a career-high 27 points, also chipping in four rebounds, three assists and a career-high five steals. Huff added 23 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season along with two blocks and two assists.
"I thought Daneesha did a great job," Roberts said. "She is so good defensively. She has quick hands and she is long and athletic. She just has an instinct for the ball and I wouldn't want her guarding me. The steals get her going and the defense gets us going. She hit some big shots in the second half and got going and that kind of took the lid off for us in shooting threes."
The Utes also had a pair of freshmen with strong performances against the Redhawks after
Dre'Una Edwards reached double digits with 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Dru Gylten posted a career-high 11 assists in the game, also throwing in nine points.
All 11 of Utah's made field goals in the first quarter were layups with the Utes dominating the paint. The Redhawks had three turnovers in just the first two minutes of the game, allowing Utah to get going on both sides of the court, eventually taking a 12-4 lead heading into the first media timeout.
Huff exploded for 10 points in the second quarter and was key in setting off a 19-2 run to make it 44-21 with 5:22 on the clock after hitting back-to-back threes. Despite a 6-0 run by Seattle U late in the quarter, the Utes were able to head into halftime with a comfortable 50-31 advantage.
Gylten scored seven of her nine points in the third quarter with the Utes taking its largest lead of the night at 32 points with 2:46 on the clock. Utah shot 57-percent from the floor in the third quarter while holding the Redhawks to just 16-percent from the three to take a 73-46 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Utes started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 scoring streak with Provo putting up seven points in the run to make it 85-54 with 4:36 left to play in the game. Provo finished the quarter with 10 more points with the Utes claiming its sixth victory of the season.
Utah returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they host Utah Valley in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game is set for a 5:30 p.m. MT tip and will air on Pac-12 Networks.
