RENO, Nev. – The University of Utah women's basketball team came away with a 74-52 season opening win on the road tonight against Nevada, starting the season 1-0.Â
There were ups and downs, but the young Utah team kept its composure with nine of the 10 players that saw action scoring at least two points.Â
"It wasn't a thing of beauty," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "It looked like we had five freshmen out there. We had moments where we really were rolling and then some moments where we weren't, but that is typical first game stuff. I thought we showed a lot of resilience. We were only up four going into the media timeout in the third quarter and we won by 22."
Dre'Una Edwards led the Utes with a double-double in her first collegiate game, scoring 16 points and putting up a game high 15 rebounds. She also added a block and an assist in her 24 minutes of play.Â
"Her 15 rebounds and 16 points in just 24 minutes of play was great," Roberts said. "She is incredibly efficient and I still think there is so much room for her to grow and get better, so it's exciting."Â
Megan Huff added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Utah's second double-double on the day with
Dru Gylten chipping in 11 points and six assists.
Daneesha Provo rounded out Utah's double-digit scorers with 10 points, also contributing a game high four steals.Â
Â
Utah started slow on offense but quickly got rolling, taking a 22-12 lead to end the first quarter after shooting 52-percent from the floor. Provo was a perfect 3-for-3 shooting, including going 2-for-2 from the three while the Utes forced Nevada to nine turnovers in the quarter.Â
The Utes went cold in the second quarter, shooting just 29-percent, allowing the Wolf Pack to go on a 9-0 run late in the quarter. The 9-0 run cut the Utah lead to 29-27 with less than three minutes to go in the quarter before the Utes answered with a 7-0 run of their own to get back on track.Â
The Utes started the third quarter with a 36-29 lead, immediately going on a 6-0 run that was sparked by four unanswered points by Edwards. It became a game of runs in the third quarter with Utah ending the quarter with a 57-44 advantage after
Niyah Becker scored all nine of her points in the third.Â
Utah outscored the Wolf Pack 17-8 in the fourth quarter, holding Nevada to just 18-percent from the floor. Huff scored seven of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, wearing down the Wolf Pack defense to put the Utes out of range for the win.Â
The Utes return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when they host Alabama for their home opener. The game is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip and will be streamed on UtahUtes.com.Â
