BERKELEY, Calif. – Utah women's basketball put forth another strong second half on the road this weekend, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to overcome the California Golden Bears, falling 84-73 on Sunday afternoon. Utah is 15-10 overall this season and 6-8 in Pac-12 play.
Cal led by as many as 20 points in the second quarter, but Utah battled back with
Tori Williams scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter to make it a six-point game with 2:19 left to play. Utah attempted to get the steal, but was forced to foul as Cal ran out the clock with the Bears hitting six free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
"It's always frustrating to lose," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "Today was a potential opportunity game for us, but we were unable to get the win. I am proud of the way we played in the second half. We were more aggressive, but just couldn't get it done. We continue to show ourselves that we are really good when we play as the aggressors, but pretty average when we don't. We need to regroup and get ready for our final two home games this weekend."
Utah was led by redshirt junior
Megan Huff, who scored a career-high 27 points, adding five rebounds and two assists. Williams chipped in 13 points while
Daneesha Provo added 12 points to round out Utah's double-digit scorers.
Cal jumped out to an 11-point lead early in the first quarter with the Utes struggling to get going offensively, but strong passing plays from
Erika Bean to Provo for four unanswered points made it 21-16 with 2:42 on the clock. Unfortunately, Cal answered with a 9-1 run, eventually heading into the second quarter with a 30-19 advantage.
The Utes had problems getting into an offensive rhythm in the second quarter, committing six turnovers while going 0-for-3 from the arc. Despite the problems on offense, Utah was able to force four turnovers in the quarter, but went into halftime down 47-32.
Things turned around in the third quarter with Utah outscoring the Golden Bears 22-19, shooting 55-percent from the floor. It was an 8-2 run that sparked some fire for the Utes as they cut the Cal lead to 56-44 with all eight points coming in the paint from Provo, Huff and
Emily Potter.
Utah entered the fourth quarter down by 12 points, but with less than five minutes left to play in the game, Williams hit lights out, scoring 11 straight points that included three consecutive three-pointers to make it 76-70. Cal was able to make it an eight-point game with 1:38 on the clock with Utah having to try and force the turnover with less than a minute to go.
With 50 seconds left on the clock, the Utes were forced to foul. Cal was able to convert six free throws in the final minute of the game, securing the 84-73 win.
Utah will return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Feb. 16 when they host Washington State at 7 p.m. MT. The game will air on Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Washington.
