SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team came away with a 54-50 win over Washington State at home tonight, securing its 16
th win of the season and head coach
Lynne Roberts' 50
th win at the helm of the Utes. Utah improved to 16-10 and 7-8 in Pac-12 play.
It was a close game from start to finish with Utah's biggest lead at only eight points in the first quarter. Despite the tough fight, the Utes never trailed, earning a good win in the Huntsman Center.
"It feels good to get the win at home today," Roberts said. "It wasn't pretty, but at this point, it is February 16, so it is just about finding a way. There are a lot of things that we need to clean up, but I am just happy that we got the win."
Emily Potter led the Utes with 16 points, adding seven rebounds and four steals.
Megan Huff added 12 points and five boards while
Tanaeya BoClair was 4-for-5 from the floor for nine points and three rebounds off the bench.
Erika Bean also turned in a well-rounded game with eight points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Potter propelled the Utes through the first quarter, scoring eight of her 16 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. Utah shot 57-percent from the field in the first quarter, holding Washington State to just 26-percent, taking an 18-10 lead heading into the second.
The Utes stumbled offensively in the second quarter, but was able to keep Washington State to below 40-percent for the second straight quarter. The Cougars cut the Utah lead to two quickly with back-to-back threes to open the quarter, but the Utes stayed strong with strong paint presence from BoClair to send the Utes into halftime up 31-25.
Washington State was able to outscore the Utes 12-9 in the third quarter, holding Utah to just three made field goals. The never say die attitude continued for the Utes though throughout the quarter, answering all of Washington State's runs, holding a three-point lead at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter came down to composure and experience for the Utes as Washington State stayed on their heels, cutting Utah's lead to just one at the 6:00 mark. Utah continued to be aggressive in the paint with
Erika Bean, Huff and
Tori Williams all scoring key free throws down the stretch, eventually sealing Utah's 54-50 win.
Utah returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 18 when they host Washington for Senior Day. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip.
