SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team's second half surge lifted them past the Washington Huskies today, defeating them 81-46. Utah improves to 17-10 overall and 8-8 in Pac-12 play.
It was a one-point game to start the third quarter, but thanks to a 23-4 run in the third quarter, Utah was able to pull away and completely control the game.
"We were trying to make homerun plays in the first half and we had 13 turnovers, which was just inexcusable," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "Washington was playing hard and playing well defensively, but then we regrouped and our defense picked up. Offensively, we had 13 turnovers in the first half and four in the second, and I think that was the difference in the game."
The Utes were led in scoring by freshman
Tori Williams, who scored 29 points, adding six rebounds and four assists. It was a career-high for the true freshman, the most points by a newcomer under the direction of head coach
Lynne Roberts and she tied the Huntsman Center record for threes made with seven.
Utah's seniors also came out ready to play with
Emily Potter scoring 18 points along with a season-high tying 16 rebounds.
Tilar Clark added nine points, four rebounds and a Utah-best six assists.
Tanaeya BoClair also came away with a well-rounded game of five points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
"I am proud of those seniors," Roberts said. "They've had great impact on our program. I always tell players that how you know you've done your job is if you leave the program in better shape than you found it, and they have. The program is heading in the right direction and they can look back and say that they had a part in that."
The Utes took an early lead in the first quarter on a 10-0 run to make it 10-2 at the 5:05 mark while holding Washington scoreless for over four minutes. The Huskies answered with two quick threes to cut the Utah lead to two, but strong post-play from Potter sent Utah into the second quarter up by five.
Washington took the reins on a 6-0 run with 4:43 left in the second, gaining an 18-17 lead with Utah turning the ball over six times in the quarter. The Utes continued to keep their composure, answering Washington's second quarter rally by taking a 24-23 lead heading into halftime thanks to two quick buckets by Williams.
Coming out of halftime, Utah, and in particular Williams, came out on Fire. Utah outscored Washington 37-6 in the third quarter, the most points by the Utes in a single quarter this season. Williams was 5-for-5 from the floor that included going a perfect 4-for-4 from deep with Huff also going 4-for-4 shooting to give Utah a 61-29 lead to end the third quarter.
Williams continued to press in the fourth quarter, scoring eight more points while Utah forced Washington to just 30-percent shooting. Potter added five more points to her stat line in the fourth, including hitting her second-career three-pointer.
Utah returns to action when they travel to Los Angeles for its final regular season games. Utes get started at USC on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
