SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis will be back in action this week for three home matches at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. On Friday, the Utes will match up against the Boise State Broncos (1-4), with play set to begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, they will then have two matches, playing against UC Irvine (1-3) at 10 a.m., followed by a match against the University of Montana (1-0) at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up competition for the weekend.
"I'm proud of the way we competed this past weekend," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "We beat a very young and talented Denver team and improved to 9-1 over the weekend. We still have a lot of room for improvement and look forward to the opportunity to play three more good teams at home this weekend."
For this weekend's match against Montana, the University of Utah will be hosting Tommy Tough Day, where the men and women will play simultaneously at 5:30 p.m. The proceeds of this event will go towards the Child Heart Disease research and families.
Utah notes
The Utes are coming off of a road trip to Colorado over this past weekend, defeating the Denver Pioneers 5-2, and then swept the Northern Colorado Bears 7-0. Against the University of Denver, Utah took an early edge in double play with
Egbert Weverink and
Joe Woolley picking up a 7-6 win over Jorge Nunez and Mattia Ros at the No. 2 position.
Azat Hankuliyev and
Dan Little then picked up the final win needed to secure the doubles point for the Utes, beating out Pedro F. De Valle and Eric Morris with a score of 7-6 on the No. 3 court. In singles action,
Dan Little picked up the first win for the Utes against Eric Morris at the No. 1 spot, with a final score of 6-3, 6-2.
Egbert Weverink then followed with a win of his own at the No. 4 position, moving past Jorge Nunez, 6-3, 7-6. On the No. 2 court,
David Micevski picked up a victory against Mattia Ros with a score of 6-3, 7-5. Then in a competitive match at the No. 6 spot,
Santiago Sierra bested Sean Huynh with a final score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, defeating the Pioneers with a score of 5-2. Against the Northern Colorado Bears, the Utah men's tennis team started things by earning the doubles point.
Azat Hankuliyev and Danlittle recorded the first win for the Utes, beating out Nick Wade and Michael Kritzinger at the No. 3 spot with a score of 6-3.
Russell Benkaim and
Randy Cory the secured the point by defeating Cassell King and Connor Finerty on the No. 1 court, with a final score of 6-4. In singles action,
Slava Shainyan bested Northern Colorado's Kyle Pease at the No. 3 position in a back and forth match, with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Chase Stoner all won in straight sets to give the Utes a 7-0 victory and head home to Salt Lake City undefeated on the weekend.

Boise State opened Mountain West Conference play Sunday afternoon at defending champion Utah State where the Broncos fell to the Aggies 4-0. The match opened with a tightly contested doubles point where the Broncos came up on the short end of the scores. The Aggies took No. 1 singles 7-5 over Boise State's Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin, followed by a 6-4 loss on court two by Ryland McDermott and Matteo Tinelli. The pair of wins by Utah State handed the Aggies the team point and stopped the No. 3 doubles match, featuring the Broncos' Wyatt DeMulling and Stefan Lalovic, tied at 6-6. The team victory was decided when the Aggies claimed three-straight singles matches over Boise State's DeMulling (6-0, 6-4) on court four, Butters (6-3, 6-2) on court three and Matteo Tinelli (6-2, 6-4) at No. 2 singles. Jack Heslin was in a tight battle on court one down 7-5, 5-5 with Jaime Barajas when the contest was abandoned with the team victory. No. 5 and 6 singles had just begun when the Aggies clinched the match.
The UC Irvine Anteaters dropped a 5-2 decision to the eighth-ranked USC Trojans over the past weekend in Los Angeles. Luis Lopez and Daniel Gealner both won their singles matches to lead the Anteaters. Lopez battled it out to defeat Laurens Verboven, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) at the No. 3 spot while Gealner won 6-4, 7-6 (0) on court six. On court one, Sebastian Heim dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to nationally-ranked No. 11 Brandon Holt. Luca Maquard fell in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2 while Mason Hanse and Vatsal Bajpai dropped in No. 3 and 5, respectively. In doubles play, Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing went the distance with Holt/Smolicki, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot but the Trojans won Nos. 1-2 to clinch the point.
The University of Montana Grizzlies are coming off of their first match of the spring season, rolling over Lewis-Clark State with a score of 7-0. The Griz swept the doubles point 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 to go up 1-0 early in the match, and didn't look back from there, taking six straight-sets wins in the singles round. Canellopoulos and Yannik Schmidl Montana's all-conference doubles pair, picked up where they left off after running through Big Sky competition 7-1 last season, taking a 6-2 win on court 1. Canellopoulos was also dominant on singles court three, defeating LCSC's Tony Chin (6-0, 6-1) to take the first match of the day. Sophomore Ludvig Hallgren was also dominant for the Griz, blanking LCSC's Roberto Salazar (6-0, 6-0) on court six.
