Utes Open Weekend with Victory Over Boise State

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team defeated Boise State today with a final score of 4-0. With this win, the Utes move to 10-1 overall on the season.
"I thought today was going to be a very difficult day, Boise State is always a very tough opponent and is very energetic," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "They've been the team to beat in our region for a very long time, and this went better than expected. I think we came out and played very well in doubles, and then that momentum followed us into singles."
The Utes started off the night by taking the doubles point against the Broncos. Egbert Weverink and Joe Woolley got things started on the No. 2 court, defeating Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck with a score of 6-1. Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim then sealed the doubles point with a win over Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin at the No. 1 position, finishing with a final score of 6-2.
In singles, Dan Little was dominant at the No. 2 spot, defeating Matteo Tinelli with a final score of 6-1, 6-3. Santiago Sierra then followed with a win at the No. 4 position, beating out Mattia Bedolo with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Joe Woolley then sealed the victory for the Utes on the No. 6 court, edging out Stefan Lalovic, 6-4, 6-2, to give the Utah men's tennis team the win.
The Utes will be back in action tomorrow morning, Feb. 17th, to take on UC Irvine at 10 a.m., followed by a match against the University of Montana at 5:30 p.m., to wrap up competition for the weekend. Against Montana, the University of Utah will be hosting Tommy Tough Day, where the men and women will play simultaneously at 5:30 p.m. The proceeds of this event will go towards the Child Heart Disease research and families.
