SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team will be taking a road trip to Colorado this weekend, as they will face off against the University of Denver (2-0) and the University of Northern Colorado (4-1).
Both matches will be held on Sunday, Feb. 11
th, with the Utes paying a visit to Denver, Colorado, to take on the University of Denver at 11:30 a.m. MST. They will then head north to Greeley, Colorado, to take on the UNC Bears at 6 p.m. MST to wrap up play for the weekend.
"We are excited to travel to Denver to play two very good teams in DU and Northern Colorado," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "We always have great battles with the Pioneers and look forward to another competitive match with them. Northern Colorado is a team we haven't played in quite some time, so we will need to do our homework and prepare for them."
Utah Notes
The Utah men's tennis team swept both Pacific and Northern Arizona over the weekend to improve to a record of 7-1. The Pacific Tigers were shorthanded in their match against the Utes, with only four players from their roster being able to make the trip to Salt Lake City. With this, Pacific had to forfeit one doubles match and two singles matches because of the absences from their roster. With the forfeit of the doubles point, the Utes started 1-0 in doubles to start the day.
Randy Cory and
Russell Benkaim captured the one win needed to earn the doubles point, defeating Mikayel Khachatryan and Johnathon Lieu with a score of 6-1 at the No. 1 position. The two forfeited points in singles then put the Utes up 3-0 on Pacific to start singles play.
Dan Little then got things started with a win over Johnathon Lieu at the No. 2 positon, with a final score of 6-2, 6-2.
Slava Shainyan followed with a win of his own, defeating John Garner on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-4. At the No. 1 spot,
David Micevski defeated Mikayel Khachatryan with a score of 6-0, 7-5.
Joe Woolley then wrapped things up for the day, finishing off Nathan Hampton with a score of 6-2, 7-5, to give the Utes the win. The Utah men's tennis team then kept things rolling later in the day against Northern Arizona, earning the doubles point to go up early on the Lumberjacks. To start things off,

Dan Little defeated Felix Schumann and Chris Steele at the No. 3 position with a score of 6-3.
Randy Cory and Russel Benkaim then finished things off on the No. 1 court, edging out Tim Handel and Ruben Montano, 6-4. In singles action,

Santiago Sierra all won in straight sets to put the Utes up 5-0.
Egbert Weverink then defeated Felix Schumann at the No. 3 spot with a final score of 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.
David Micevski then wrapped things up at the No. 2 position with a victory of 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, over Lucas Taylor to give the Utes the victory.
Opponent Notes
The University of Denver men's tennis team defeated Valparaiso University, 4-3, on Saturday at the Match Point Tennis Complex in Griffith, Ind. The victory moved Denver to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Summit League. The Pioneers split the singles matches with the Crusaders. Eric Morris in the No. 2 spot, Sean Huynh in the No. 5 spot and Pedro Fernandez Del Valle in the No. 6 spot each earned victories on the singles courts, with Huynh picking up a decisive 6-0, 6-2 win against Garrett Gardner. In doubles play, Denver's Matt Summer and Jesse Ruder-Hook combined to defeat Chad Kissell and Kweisi Kenyatte, 7-6 (6-1) and the pairing of Jorge Nunez and Mattia Ros defeated Brandon Ancona and Gabriel Carvajal, 6-3.
The University of Northern Colorado is coming off a weekend that consisted of two wins, against Metropolitan State and Colorado College. The Bears swept doubles play and went on to defeat Metropolitan State 5-2 in men's tennis Saturday afternoon at Work Out West Fitness Center. UNC also picked up wins in singles from No. 1 Connor Finerty, No. 3 Nick Wade, No. 5 Tommy Smalley, and No. 6 Alex Exsted. In doubles, Northern Colorado quickly took the team point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Winning at No. 1 proved a more difficult task. The set stayed on serve for the all the way through to 6-6, necessitating a tiebreaker. The experienced UNC pairing of Connor Finerty and Cassell King were down 4-1, then were able to come back thanks to strong serving as they won 7-5. In singles, No. 4 Michael Kritzinger was first off the court as he dispatched Fr. Daniel Lloerente in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Soon after, Nick Wade gave the Bears a 3-0 lead with a win over Soph. Alejandro Martinez-Morilla 7-6(2), 6-2. Connor Finerty sealed the team victory with his win at No. 1 over Josh Graetz. Graetz, a senior, had been 4-0 in singles coming into Saturday contest. Finerty lost the first set 6-3 and came back to win sets two and three 6-3, 7-5 respectively. On Sunday, Northern Colorado then defeated Colorado College with a final score of 6-1. The Bears won two of three doubles matches and No. 4 Tommy Smalley made quick work of Brian Chen, winning 6-0, 6-0 to give the Bears a commanding lead in the contest. Connor Finerty was able to best Soph. Noah Forman in straight sets at No. 1 as well.
