Men's Tennis Sweeps Middle Tennessee State 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In the second day of competition at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, the University of Utah men's tennis team swept Middle Tennessee State with a score of 4-0. The Utes are now 3-2 overall on the season.
"I'm very proud of the guys for this gutsy win," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "This is a very good MTSU team and we had to battle for every inch today. Regardless of the score we continued to work through adversity and worked our tails off. I'm happy for the guys that it paid dividends."
The Utah men's tennis team started off the day by earning the doubles point against Middle Tennessee. After the Utes dropped the first match on court No. 3, David Micevski and Slava Shainyan rallied back against Morell Raschiatore and Pavel Motl with a score of 6-2. Then, to seal the doubles point at the No. 1 position, Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim knocked off Tom Moonen and Stijan Slump with a score of 7-6.
Then, in singles, the No. 95 ranked Dan Little topped Stijan Slump at the No. 1 spot with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Following with his own victory on the No. 4 court, Benkaim defeated Pavel Motl with a final score of 6-4, 6-4. Mathias Gavelin then completed the sweep for the Utes at the No. 6 position against Francisco Rocha, dropping the first set and then rallying back to win, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action on February 2nd, as they will be taking on Northern Arizona in a home match at the Eccles Center in Salt Lake City. There will be two matches against Northern Arizona that day, with the first one to begin at 11 a.m. MT, followed by another match starting at 5 p.m. MT to close out the day.
