SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program fell in overtime to the South Dakota Coyotes on Saturday afternoon, 84-81. Utah is 0-3 this season.
The Utes were down eight with 3:58 remaining in regulation, fighting back to within one when Ola Makurat sunk a corner three-pointer to give Utah a 71-69 lead with just nine seconds to play. South Dakota took possession of the ball, drawing a foul with five seconds on the clock, and were able to convert on two free throws to send the game into overtime.
Utah trailed by four points early in the overtime period, but after Brynna Maxwell was fouled on a three-point attempt making all three free throws, and a quick fast break layup by Dru Gylten, the Utes were back on top with 1:55 remaining. South Dakota would go on to make four free throws in the final 1:38 of the game with the Utes unable to score in that time frame, allowing the Coyotes to take the win.
"I was proud of our toughness the whole game, we just showed our inexperience against a really experienced team," head coach Lynne Roberts said. "South Dakota is very good. They returned around 10 people from last year that made the NCAA Tournament. You could see it down the stretch, they just had a little more poise."
"I am proud of our team's toughness and we showed some fight. Offensively, we are still a work in progress, but we scored 81 points and we hit 10 threes. There are a lot of new people playing together. We have nine players that have never played together, so it is going to take some time. Our schedule has been hard – by design. We are learning who we are, and who we aren't, and we will move on."
Through three games, the Utes have had six different players score in double-digits with three different leading scorers. Today against the Coyotes, freshman Lola Pendande was unstoppable in the post, scoring 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding nine rebounds.
Makurat contributed 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including going 4-for-8 from the three. Senior Kiana Moore added 12 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor with Gylten chipping in nine points, five assists and three rebounds.
The fight that Roberts talked about was evident in the first quarter after the Coyotes jumped out to an early 10-0 lead with the Utes not scoring until the 7:05 mark. Gylten drilled a three, sparking a 9-0 run by the Utes that included six straight points from Pendande to make it a one-point game with 5:50 left to play in the quarter.
Utah headed into the second quarter trailing 19-17, but quickly hit another offensive slump after only shooting 25-percent from the floor in the first six minutes. The Utes continued to answer though, going on an 8-2 run that included five straight points from Niyah Becker to tie the game 30-30 with 2:13 on the clock.
After coming out of halftime tied up 35-35, Utah would hit a field goal drought for over four minutes with South Dakota taking a 43-39 lead with 5:32 on the clock. Maurane Corbin scored six of her seven points in the third quarter and grabbed three rebounds.
Despite the Coyotes holding a six-point lead with under 30 seconds to play in the third quarter, Maxwell hit a three with seven seconds on the clock to send the Utes into the fourth quarter only down three.
The Utes outscored the Coyotes in the fourth quarter 20-17, battling on both sides of the ball. The eight-point deficit with under five minutes to play was daunting, but the Utes answered with Pendande's dominating performance in the paint and Makurat's pivotal three-pointer to take the two-point lead with nine seconds remaining in the game.
South Dakota would go on to send the game into overtime with its two free throws in regulation, quickly jumping out to its four-point lead with 2:45 to go in the extra period. The Utes rallied once again to take the one-point lead with 1:55 on the clock on Gylten's burst to the basket, but the Coyote free throws down the line sealed the loss for the Utes.
Utah will have a quick turnaround when they host the Eastern Washington Eagles on Monday, Nov. 18. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. MT in the Jon M. Huntsman Center with a live stream available on UtahUtes.com.
