HONOLULU, Hawaii – The University of Utah women's basketball team posted a 61-52 win over the Texas Southern Tigers today in the Bank of Hawaii Classic, improving to 2-3 overall this season.
The Utes only trailed in the game for 28 seconds, and despite Texas Southern taking a run at the Utes late in the game, Utah came away with its second victory of the season. Utah shot 42-percent from the floor while holding the Tigers to 34-percent shooting, and even though Utah forced 18 turnovers in the game, the Utes' 26 turnovers committed allowed Texas Southern to keep things close down the stretch.
"I would rather win ugly than lose pretty," head coach Lynne Roberts said. "I thought we had a great first 16 minutes, and then the last four minutes of the first half we got were turning it over and we were a little sloppy and that allowed Texas Southern to gain some confidence with what they were doing defensively."
"Most of the second half we played to not lose instead of trying to win. Again, this is a learning experience. You have to give credit to Texas Southern because that is what they do, they turn people over. We didn't make smart plays and I didn't call perfect stuff against it. We are going to move on. It is a win and I'm glad we found a way to grind it out."
Two of Utah's three starting true freshmen led the Utes in scoring today with Brynna Maxwell and Lola Pendande putting together solid performances from the arc and in the paint. Maxwell finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting while Pendande notched her first collegiate double-double with 14 points (5-of-7) and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Niyah Becker was 4-for-8 from the floor with nine points and five rebounds while Kiana Moore put together a strong second half with seven points on 3-for-5 shooting along with two rebounds and one assist.
It was a strong start for the Utes in the first quarter, taking off on a 17-3 run that included 12 unanswered points, capped off by back-to-back threes from Maxwell and Becker to give Utah a 17-5 lead with 4:03 on the clock. Texas Southern was only able to score 11 points on five made field goals (26.3%) in the first quarter while Utah shot 69-percent from the floor, taking a 24-11 lead into the second quarter.
Utah's runs continued into the second period, taking a 35-14 lead on an 11-0 run while forcing five turnovers and holding Texas Southern scoreless for over five minutes of the quarter. The turnover bug hit the Utes late though, with Utah committing six turnovers over a 2:58 span, allowing the Tigers to go on an8-0 run, cutting the Utes' lead to 35-22 at halftime.
Despite Texas Southern not scoring for over a three minute period in the third quarter, turnovers slowed the Utes offensively after they committed nine in the final 7:26 of the third quarter. Texas Southern was able to make it a nine-point game with less than a minute to play in the quarter, but Moore hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Utah a 12-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Utes started the fourth quarter shooting 4-for-4 from the floor, taking a 53-41 lead on a Kemery Martín three-pointer with 6:18 on the clock for a 12-point lead. Texas Southern continued to press the Utes though, making it a four-point game with an 8-0 run with 3:37 remaining in the game.
Utah's young team showed some composure down the stretch though as Pendande made four free throws in the final 1:31 of the game, sealing Utah's 61-52 victory.
The Utes will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 24 when they play against University of Texas at San Antonio for their second game of the Bank of Hawaii Classic. The game is set to tip off at 3 p.m. MT with live stats available at UtahUtes.com.
