SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program battled the No. 8 UCLA Bruins in the Jon M. Huntsman Center tonight, but unfortunately Utah's strong third quarter rally wasn't enough, falling 84-54. Utah is 7-8 overall this season and 0-4 in Pac-12 play.
The Utes trailed by double-digits in the second quarter, but fought back to take the lead on a 15-2 run to start the third quarter. Utah held the Bruins scoreless until the 4:05 mark in the third quarter, taking a three-point lead on a pivotal bucket from beyond the arc by
Brynna Maxwell.
Unfortunately for the Utes, the momentum started to shift in UCLA's direction with the Bruins taking off on a 13-3 run to finish the third quarter with a seven-point advantage. That 13-3 run would turn into a 48-15 scoring run through the fourth quarter with the Utes losing steam in the final period, ultimately falling 84-54.
The Utes were led in scoring by junior
Julie Brosseau, who put up 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor, adding an assist and a steal. Freshman
Lola Pendande contributed nine points, three rebounds and two blocks with
Dru Gylten pitching in seven points and six assists.
STAT OF THE GAME
Julie Brosseau led the Utes in scoring for the second time this season and reached double-digits for the fifth time. She finished the game with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting (57%).
It is the sixth time this season she has shot for 50-percent or higher and her 57-percent shooting tonight was a season-high for the Repentigny, Quebec, native.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: Head Coach Lynne Roberts
"I felt like we were so, so close. We competed and our kids were in it. We didn't shoot for percentage. To beat the No. 8, undefeated team in the country you need to shoot well, and we shot just OK. You are kind of playing with fire with their offense and their fire power, and they just took over. Once they had that 10-11-point lead, they kind of relaxed a little bit and the rim got bigger for them and we got tight."
"I am proud of our job on the boards tonight. I am proud of our defensive fight. I thought we had a great defensive game plan, we just kind of ran out of gas there. The score doesn't indicate the fight and doesn't indicate the battle that this game was. I am not one for moral victories, but I do think it was progress for us."
"The message is that we are right there. It is the same message I said this week – we have one of the toughest starts in the conference with the Oregon's on the road and then UCLA. We have to continue to just chop. At some point, we are going to have our breakthrough game. We can't control the schedule and we can't control who we play when, but if we compete like that on Sunday, we are going to have the moment. As competitors, if you start bowing away from the process, then the wheels start to fall off – and I am not going to let that happen."
