STANFORD, Calif. – It was a game of two halves for the Utah women's basketball team today in Maples Pavilion, falling to the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal on Sunday afternoon. Utah is 10-9 overall this season and 3-5 in Pac-12 play.
Despite committing 12 turnovers in the first half, Utah was able to keep the game within single digits, including holding Stanford to a low scoring second quarter. The second half would be a different story with the Cardinal outscoring the Utes 51-27.
After committing double-digit turnovers in the first half, Utah only turned the ball over four times in the second, but the Utes were unable to slow down the Stanford offense. The Utes made it a 10-point game with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter, but Stanford would go on to knock down three from beyond the arc in the final two minutes of the period to take a 17-point lead into the fourth.
Utah finished the game shooting 36-percent from the floor and just 30-percent from the three while getting out-rebounded 42-29. The Utes were able to finish the game with three players in double digits, including two true freshmen.
GAME LEADERS
Freshman Kemery Martín led the Utes in scoring with 13 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the three. Both
Andrea Torres and
Brynna Maxwell chipped in 10 points with Torres adding three rebounds and two assists.
Dru Gylten recorded a team-high five rebounds and five assists, adding two points.
Lola Pendande also contributed six points along with four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
STAT OF THE GAME
Martín scored a career-high 13 points against Stanford with all 13 points coming in the second half, including nine in the fourth quarter. She was 3-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the three in the fourth quarter, adding a made free throw.
NOTABLE
- With her 10 points today, Brynna Maxwell leads the Utes this season in double-digit games. She has reached double-digits in 12 games this season including in the last three after going six games without reaching the feat.
- Andrea Torres scored 10 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the three, reaching double-digits for the fifth time this season. She didn't missed a shot until the third quarter of the game.
- Dru Gylten led the team in assists with five. She has led or tied for the lead in assists in 15 of the 18 games she has appeared in this season.
- Martín reached double-digits for the second time this season. She is the seventh player for the Utes to lead the team in scoring in at least one game this season.
