EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Utah women's basketball team fell to 0-3 in Pac-12 play and 7-7 overall today on the road, losing to the No. 2 Oregon Ducks 88-51.
Utah was able to knock down nine three-pointers in the game, but the high-powered Ducks caused issues for the Utes on both sides of the ball. Utah shot 37-percent from the floor and 32-percent from the arc while also committing 20 turnovers while Oregon finished the game shooting 53-percent overall.
For the second straight game, the Utes were able to hold the best three-point percentage team in the conference to a low shooting total, holding the Ducks to just 5-of-17 from the arc (29%) after they entered the game hitting 39-percent of its shots from deep. Even with poor shooting from the arc, the Ducks were able to outscore the Utes 50-18 in the paint for 57-percent of their point total.
Ten of the 11 players that saw action for the Utes today scored at least two points, led by true freshman
Lola Pendande. Pendande finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting (67%), also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds that included four offensive boards.
Brynna Maxwell was successful from the three-point line today, scoring nine points on three made from deep with
Andrea Torres contributing eight points that included going 2-for-4 from the arc.
After getting outscored 24-10 in the first quarter, the Utes got some momentum in the second, scoring 14 points while holding Oregon to 16. The Utes struggled in the third quarter though, only shooting 14-percent from three while the Ducks went off for 24 more points on 10 made buckets.
The Utes played a strong fourth quarter, shooting 58-percent overall and 50-percent from the arc, scoring 18 points. Pendande scored six of her 12 points in the final quarter with Torres, Maxwell and
Ola Makurat all knocking down threes in the period.
STAT OF THE GAME
The Utes were able to knock down nine three-pointers against the Oregon Ducks, the second-most scored against Oregon this season (10 by Syracuse, 11/24/19).
It is the seventh time this season that the Utes have knocked down eight-or-more threes in a game and the 43
rd time in the
Lynne Roberts era. Utah entered the game ranked third in the Pac-12 in three-pointers made per game (8.2) and total three-pointers made (106).
NOTABLE
- Senior Kiana Moore scored the first five points of the game for the Utes and five of Utah's 10 points in the first quarter.
- Lola Pendande shot over 60-percent for the ninth time this season and for the third time in the last four games. She is shooting a team-high 65-percent from the floor this season (74-of-113).
- Andrea Torres and Brynna Maxwell combined for five of Utah's nine three-pointers today with Maxwell knocking down 3-of-8 and Torres going 2-of-4. Torres has hit two-or-more threes in back-to-back games and Maxwell has hit two-or-more from beyond the arc in 11 games this season.
- With Maxwell's three made shots from beyond the arc today, she has yet to have a game this season without a made three-pointer.
