SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team battled the No. 10 Oregon State Beavers in the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 77-65. Utah is 10-11 overall and 3-7 in Pac-12 play this season.
After there were four lead changes in the first five minutes of the game, the Utes took off on a 6-0 run on back-to-back threes from
Kiana Moore to take a 14-9 lead. Utah would head into the second quarter with an eight-point advantage, but the offensive struggles for the Utes would begin in the period, only shooting 17-percent from the floor with the Beavers tying the game 32-32 at halftime.
Oregon State would open the third quarter with eight unanswered points, but a 7-1 run by the Utes capped off by a pivotal three by
Brynna Maxwell would make it a two-point game. Unfortunately for the Utes, that would be the closest they would get as Oregon State answered with a 10-0 run, eventually taking a 19-point lead into the final quarter of the game.
The Utes outscored the Beavers 22-15 in the fourth quarter, even going on a 16-2 run late with Maxwell scoring 10 of the 16 points during the scoring run. But it wouldn't be enough, with the Beavers leaving the Huntsman Center with a 12-point victory.
Utah finished the game shooting 32-percent from the floor and 35-percent from the arc, but went a perfect 18-of-18 from the free throw line.
LEADERS
The Utes finished with three players with 15-plus points in the game in
Lola Pendande,
Brynna Maxwell and
Kiana Moore. Pendande and Maxwell contributed 17 points each with Pendande adding four rebounds, two assists, three blocks and a steal.
Maxwell shot 6-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the arc with Moore rounding out Utah's double-digit scorers with 16 points. Moore finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from the floor with four made threes.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: Head Coach Lynne Roberts
"We played good in the first and the fourth quarter. I think in the second quarter we played really hard and defensively we were locked in, but we only scored eight points and we shot 17-percent. Third quarter was a lot of the same only making four baskets, so you have to be able to score points. Oregon State is a very good defensive team. Then I thought in the fourth quarter, it was almost like once the game had been decided, that is when we kicked it into gear again and played fearless."
"I am sick of losing. I think our team has potential that we haven't tapped yet. We have to keep grinding. We have to keep chopping wood as I always say."
STANDOUT STAT
Utah went a perfect 18-for-18 from the free throw line against the Beavers, setting a school record for single-game free throw percentage when making 10 or more. It is the first time the Utes have gone perfect from the charity stripe since the Utes game against Oregon State on Jan. 20, 2017 when they went 4-for-4.
Freshman
Lola Pendande was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line today, a career-high for the Almeria, Spain, native. Other Utes who didn't miss from the line today include
Dru Gylten (2-2),
Brynna Maxwell (3-3) and
Niyah Becker (4-4).
NOTABLE

- Lola Pendande reached double-digits for the first time since Utah's game at Colorado, scoring 17. It was her 12th game in double-digits and fifth game with 15+ points.
