LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Utah women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the 2020 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament today with a 72-63 win over the Washington Huskies. The Utes are 14-16 overall this season.
It was a game of runs for the Utes and the Huskies with both teams going on key scoring streaks, but Utah's 14-2 run in the third quarter would end up helping propel the Utes to its first tournament win since 2014.
The Utes started strong, shooting 60-percent from the floor and from the three in the first quarter, taking a 21-17 lead into the second. The Utes forced five turnovers in the first quarter, disrupting the Washington offense, holding them to 38-pecent shooting for the quarter.
Washington jumped out to a 32-25 lead in the second quarter on a 13-2 run, but the Utes would continue to fight, bringing it back within two after holding the Huskies scoreless for over four minutes. The Utes would lose offensive momentum late in the quarter though, committing three turnovers in the final three minutes to allow Washington to take a 36-30 lead into halftime.
Utah would continue to push forward, taking off on its 14-2 run in the third quarter to take a 51-42 lead with freshman
Brynna Maxwell scoring 11 of the 14 points in the streak. The run would give the Utes the lead for good, holding Washington scoreless for over four minutes late in the third quarter, forcing four turnovers during that time.
The Utes would lead by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter with Washington cutting it to four with 4:58 remaining in the game. Utah kept its composure though with freshman
Lola Pendande hitting back-to-back points in the paint to push the Utes back out to eight with Utah eventually walking away with its nine-point victory.
Utah finished the game shooting 48-percent from the floor, putting together a balanced offensive attack that saw the Utes score eight threes while outscoring the Huskies 36-20 in the paint. The Utes also stayed strong on the boards, out-rebounding Washington 37-28.

TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: Head Coach Lynne Roberts
"First off, I want to congratulate Washington on a great year. Amber Melgoza is tough to stop. We didn't do a good job of it in the first half, made some adjustments at halftime and we were more effective in the second half. But that is when you know she is a really good player, because we felt we shut her down in the second half and she still scored 11."
"I am really proud of our team today. I really thought we had three great quarters. The first, third and fourth we were great, the second quarter we were awful. We had a much different look in the second half in terms of our toughness and swagger and we hit some big shots at moments where we need a bucket."
"
Brynna Maxwell is a talent. She kind of got us going there in that third quarter, and then
Dru Gylten is our anchor. I thought she did a tremendous job on Melgoza in that third quarter. But it was a total team win, and I am really proud of our group."
STANDOUT STAT
Maxwell knocked down a perfect 5-for-5 from the three-point line today, giving her 80 total this season which leads the Pac-12 and ranks second among freshmen nationally this season. Her 80 made threes set a new Utah freshman record today, passing Julie Krommenhoek who had 76 as a freshman in 1994-95.
Her 80 threes also moved her into the top-five all-time in Utah history in single-season threes, ranking fifth, passing Kalee Whipple who had 77 in 2009-09.
NOTABLE
