OPENING TIP
(all statistical rankings are updated through games of 12/30/22)
- The Utes are off to their best start, at 13-0, since joining the Pac-12 in 2011-12, and are 2-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time since 2015-16. The best overall start in program history is 16-0 in 1997-98 when Utah was a member of the WAC.
- The Utes have matched the program's highest position in the AP poll this week, moving up one spot to 11th. The Utes also ranked 11th for one week on Jan. 26, 1998. The USA Today Coaches poll also has Utah 11th this week, up one spot.
- This week's NCAA NET rankings place the Utes at No. 6, second-best among Pac-12 teams behind Stanford (3).
- The Utes have now started a season 11-0 or better three times in the eight-year tenure of head coach Lynne Roberts, and at 13-0 are one of just five unbeaten teams in the nation.
- Utah managed to win a game in uncharacteristic style on the road Friday at Pac-12 foe Washington State. The nation's No. 6 team in assist-to-turnover ratio committed 24 turnovers (its most since Jan. 22, 2021 at Arizona) and only assisted on 11 of its 25 field goals (44%, off its usual pace of 63.9%). It's the first time Utah has won a game in which it committed at least 24 turnovers since Nov. 22, 2019 (26 vs. Texas Southern; 61-52 win in Bank of Hawaii Tournament in Honolulu), and the first Pac-12 win for the Utes when committing 24 or more miscues.
- Utah is the nation's No. 2 scoring team (90.8 ppg), one of four major statistical categories in which the Utes boast a top-3 ranking: 2nd in scoring and field-goal pct. (51.9), and third in assists (20.6) and scoring margin (+32.3). Utah also ranks 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.39).
- The Utes feature a balanced scoring attack, with four players averaging in double figures: Alissa Pili (19.9), Gianna Kneepkens (13.8), Jenna Johnson (11.9) and Kennady McQueen (11.2), plus three others between 8.5 and 7.1. Pili (3rd) and Kneepkens (13th) rank in the top 15 in scoring in the Pac-12.
- Junior forward Alissa Pili leads the team in scoring (19.9; 3rd Pac-12, 24th NCAA) and ranks seventh in the nation in field-goal percentage (65.9%). She was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Nov. 28, and earlier this season topped the 1,000-career-point mark.
- Sophomore Gianna Kneepkens ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in three-point shooting percentage (46.8; 27th NCAA).
- Sophomore Ines Vieira ranks seventh in the nation in assist-turnover ratio (3.05), No. 1 among Pac-12 players.
- Utah has made 8 or more three-pointers in seven games this season, and 93 in Lynne Roberts' tenure with the Utes, compiling a record of 68-25 in those games.
- Under Lynne Roberts, Utah is 50-5 when scoring 80 or more points and 20-0 when scoring 90 or more.
- The Utes rank third in the nation in assists (20.6), including a season-best 33 against No. 16 Oklahoma, and have assisted on 62.8 percent of made field goals (268 of 427).
- Utah's 46-point victory over No. 16 Oklahoma (11/16) was the program's largest win margin vs. an AP Top 25 team, and the largest for a Pac-12 team against a ranked foe since 1999-00.
- Preseason Watch Lists: Soph. Gianna Kneepkens (Jersey Mike's Naismith Award/nation's top player; and Cheryl Miller Award/top small forward) and Jr. Alissa Pili (Katrina McClain Award for the top power forward).
- Utah holds an all-time home record of 542-131 (.805), and has won 11 of its last 12 home games. The Utes boast nine undefeated home seasons at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, and had a 28-game home winning streak from 1/1/95 to 2/8/97.
