The First Pitch: Things to Know
Seven of eight spots in the inaugural Pac-12 Baseball Tournament have been claimed, with the final position hinging on the outcome of Utah's three-game series at California this weekend. The opener is set for 7 p.m. MT on Thursday night and will be followed up on Friday (8 p.m. MT) and Saturday (1 p.m. MT). All three games will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain live from Stu Gordon Stadium.
• Utah resumes Pac-12 play fresh off a 12-7 win at BYU on Tuesday night, giving the Utes the rubber match in the season series with their in-state rival.
• The Utes are eyeing their fifth Pac-12 series win of the season and third on the road. In order, the team has claimed weekend series vs. Washington, at Washington State, vs. No. 20 Arizona and at USC.
• This is Utah's first trip to Cal since the 2018 season, which saw the Utes win the middle game of the series. Utah last won a series over the Bears in 2017 at home, and most recently in Berkeley in 2016.
• Nine Utes identify California as their home state.
• Once the Pac-12 Tournament field is finalized this weekend, teams will head to Scottsdale, Arizona for tournament competition from May 25-29.
Recap in a Minute
Utah picked up a 12-7 road win at BYU's Miller Park on Tuesday night, securing a rubber game victory in the three-game season series between the teams. Not only did the result end a nine-game winning streak for BYU, it also snapped the Utes out of a nine-game slide.
• Eight different Utes had a hit, with
Chase Anderson (4-for-6) leading the way on his first four-hit game at Utah—just a home run short of the cycle.
Landon Frei clanked a game-tying home run off the left field foul pole to begin the seventh inning, and
Alex Baeza broke the game open with a three-run double in the eighth.
TJ Clarkson also had a two-RBI, two-run night on three hits.
• Baeza's night ensured he extended his reached base streak to 10 straight games—his longest run as a Ute—while Frei pushed his hitting streak to five straight contests.
• Just as much credit is due for the Utah pitching staff, which took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and had allowed just a pair of walks to that point in the game. In the end, seven Utes appeared on the mound, with
Bryson Van Sickle (3-0) earning the victory after a 1.1-inning relief stint.
Blake Whiting wrapped up the final two innings on the bump.
