BOULDER, Colo. – The eighth-ranked Utah Utes endured a cold-shooting first-half at Colorado on Friday night, but mounted a rally in the fourth quarter that ultimately fell short, as the Buffaloes handed Utah its first loss of the season, 77-67 at the CU Events Center. Utah's 14-0 start to the season (3-0 Pac-12) fell two games short of the best start in program history, and was one of just five starts of 14-0 by a Pac-12 team in conference history. Utah was one of the last four unbeaten teams in the nation before tonight's loss.
The Utes trailed by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, their largest deficit of the season, before cutting the Colorado lead to four, at 65-61, with 2:56 to play. But Colorado kept the pressure on, playing with a physicality and an edge that gave Utah fits all night, and came up with key buckets down the stretch to pick up the win. Utah shot just 39-percent from the field, including a 27-percent clip in the first half (8-30). Colorado shot 48-percent for the game.
Colorado improved to 13-3, and 3-1 in Pac-12 play, while Utah is now 14-1, and 3-1 in the Pac-12.
Jenna Johnson led four Utah players in double-figures, with a team-high 17 points after going scoreless sin the first half. She scored 10 points in the third quarter, including a personal 8-0 run that included two three-points and kept Utah in the game.
Colorado outrebounded Utah 36-35 and made its biggest difference inside with a 46-24 advantage in points in the paint. Turnovers also were an issue for the Utes, surrendering 21, while Colorado turned it over 15 times.
Utah led 12-10 after a sloppy first quarter, and managed just 12 more points in the second quarter, while Colorado found its offensive rhythm and took a 31-24 lead into the locker room at the half. It was Utah's lowest-scoring half of the season, and the two 12-point quarters were the Utes' second- and third-lowest of the season, coming on the heals of the lowest-scoring quarter, 10 points in the second period, just five days ago against Washington. The Utes shot 54-percent in the second half, including 6-of-12 from three-point range, but could not put together enough stops at the defensive end to put enough of a dent in the Colorado lead and complete the comeback. Colorado shot 71-percent in the third quarter to keep the Utes at bay, building the lead to 13 on two occasions, before extending it to 14 early in the fourth.
Utah's comeback was fueled by a 15-5 run over a four-minute stretch, keyed by seven points each from Pili and Kneepkens. Colorado responded with four straight points to lead 69-61 before Kneepkens came back with her third three-pointer of the night to cut it to 69-64 with 1:55 to play, but that was as close as the Utes would get.
Utah's 14-game winning streak was the sixth-longest in program history, and the longest since the 2007-08 team rattled off a school-record 22-game streak.
GAME LEADERS
Jenna Johnson's 17 points paced Utah, while
Alissa Pili followed with 14 points,
Gianna Kneepkens had 13 and
Kennady McQueen added 10. Kneepkens led the Utes in rebounds with six, McQueen had a team-high three assists and shared the lead in steals (3) with
Kelsey Rees. Johnson and Pili each blocked two shots.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME – HEAD COACH LYNNE ROBERTS:
"You have to give Colorado credit. They're just so physical, and it's one of those things where they just disrupt you with their physicality. I thought in the first half we played really soft, and on our back foot, no one wanted the ball…missing layups, and kind of rushing threes. Offensively we were much better in the second half, we just couldn't get stops. Again, you have to credit Colorado. I thought they played pretty well. They played to win and I think they were the better team tonight."
STANDOUT STATS
Utah made 10 three-pointers, reaching double-figures for the sixth time this season, but the first time in the last six games. The Utes last hit 10 triples in the first meeting with Colorado at home on Dec. 14, an 85-58 win.
