OPENING TIP
The Utes return to the home base for a three-game streak as they prepare to face Merrimack for the first time. The team is also 2-0 at home for the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah defeated Eastern Kentucky in the championship game and claimed the title at the Great Alaska Shootout last weekend. With final score 117-72, the Utes saw five players score double-digit points and three players broke the 20-point mark.
Alissa Pili led the team with 28 points, followed closely by
Gianna Kneepkens with 23 points. Ines Viera reached a career-high 20 points, including a career-high six three-pointers, and led the team with seven assists. Pili was named Most Outstanding Player of the Great Alaska Shootout while Kneepkens and Vieira were both named to the All-Tournament team.
THE UTES
Utah is returning all of last year's starting five including All-American and Pac-12 Player of the Year,
Alissa Pili as well as All-American
Gianna Kneepkens. Utah also brings back starters,
Jenna Johnson,
Kennady McQueen and
Isabel Palmer. Ines Vieira,
Lani White and
Dasia Young also return for the Utes. Utah welcomes three transfers in
Matyson Wilke,
Alyssa Blanck and
Samantha Crispe as well as two true freshman
Daniela Falcon Hernandez and
Reese Ross to this year's squad.
IN THE RANKS
In this week's AP Top 25 poll, Utah came in at No. 10. The Pac-12 now has five schools in the Top 10 with UCLA (No. 2), Colorado (No. 3), Stanford (No.4), and USC (No. 8). In the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll Utah was ranked in the No. 5 slot. This is the highest preseason ranking for Utah in school history and the first time the Utes have been ranked to start a season since 2005. Utah is one of six Pac-12 schools currently ranked in the Top 25.
HEAD COACH LYNNE ROBERTS
Roberts kicked off her ninth season at the helm of the Utes. She has posted a 143-105 record in her time at Utah. She was dubbed the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2023 after leading the team to its first ever Pac-12 regular season title. She led Utah to its second ever Sweet 16 appearance. Roberts also led the Utes to the highest AP Rankings in school history, including 12 weeks in the Top 10.
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
The Warriors are coming off a 65-60 win over Bryant University. Palom Garcia led the team with 18 points. Amaya Staton trailed close behind with 16 points and seven rebounds. Merrimack is currently 1-4 overall and 0-0 in the NEC conference. Kelly Morrone is in her fourth season as head coach for the Merrimack Warriors, transitioning the program from Division II to Division I and leading the team to a 10-6 conference record in 2022-23.
NEXT UP
Utah continues the home streak with Carroll College (Nov. 28) and BYU (Dec. 2) before hitting the road to take on Saint Joesph's (Dec. 7) and No. 1 South Carolina (Dec. 10). Pac-12 action is set to start Dec. 30 at Colorado.
