MALIBU, Calif. – The Utah Baseball team tallied 18 runs and 23 hits as the Utes defeated California Baptist and Pepperdine both by a 9-4 score on Saturday at Pepperdine's Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Utes (2-1) will now look for a third straight win on Sunday when the team rematches California Baptist on Sunday at CBU's James W. Totman Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. MT in Riverside, California.
Game 1
Utah 9, California Baptist 4
Eight different Utes tallied a hit and three had multiple RBI, as home runs from left fielder
Kaden Carpenter and third baseman
Tyler Quinn gave the club plenty of insurance. Carpenter (2-for-4) and center fielder
Kai Roberts (3-for-4) each scored three times, marking a career-high for Carpenter. Carpenter, DH
Michael Davinni and Quinn drove in two runs apiece.
Right-hander
Bransen Kuehl picked up the win in relief with a 3.1-inning relief appearance, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk.
Merit Jones worked four-plus innings in his first start of the season. Kuehl induced a ground ball for an inning-ending double play in the fifth, then worked a 1-2-3 sixth to keep the momentum in the Utah dugout.
Utah plated a pair of runs in the second inning and followed up with a three-spot in the third. Carpenter put the Utes on the board scoring on an RBI groundout in the second inning, then Davinni launched a double off the left-center field wall before scoring on
Bruer Webster's infield single for the early 2-0 lead.
Though the Lancers got one back with a solo homer, Utah countered with three more runs in its half of the third. A throwing error by CBU allowed two runs to score for the Utes, then
Hunter Antillon's hard-hit grounder to third base allowed Carpenter to cross the plate.
Carpenter launched a no-doubter in the fourth, taking the 0-1 pitch high above the right field videoboard. In the bottom half of the sixth, Quinn wrapped up the scoring for Utah with his first home run as a Ute; it was a two-run shot after Roberts led off the frame with a double.
Game 2
Utah 9, Pepperdine 4
The Utes never trailed and used a five-run second inning to set the tone for the afternoon. Shortstop and leadoff man
Core Jackson belted his first home run as a Ute, finishing with three RBI. Three different Utah hitters contributed a pair of hits.
Making his first start as a Ute,
Brett Porthan went seven innings on the mound on the way to the win, allowing just one run on four hits, one walk and striking out one.
Payton Riske then came on to pitch the final two innings in what was Riske's collegiate debut.
Porthan retired the leadoff batter in six of his seven innings pitched, carrying a shutout into the sixth inning.
Jackson, Quinn and Davinni had two hits each while Jackson's three RBI led the team.
Utah sent nine men to bat in the second inning, belting out five hits while aided by a pair of Pepperdine errors. After a leadoff double for Quinn, Carpenter ripped one down the left field line that—paired with a Waves error—allowed Quinn to score.
Karson Bodily,
Bruer Webster, Jackson and Roberts all drove in runs later in the inning as Utah took a 5-0 lead.
That score remained until the fourth inning. Bodily worked the count full with one out then smacked a double to the gap in left center field, setting the stage for Jackson's big fly two batters later.
Davinni came home on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, then in the ninth
Dakota Duffalo put an RBI single through the left side, scoring Roberts. Pepperdine would put up a three-spot in its final turn at-bat, but Riske kept his poise and ultimately sealed the victory for Utah.
