The Utes fell to Syracuse 61-49 in the opening game of the Women's Basketball Showcase. Senior Maty Wilke led the Utes with a season-high 18 points while

Utah returns four key contributors from the 2024-25 season including Maty Wilke,
Samantha Crispe,
Brooke Walker and
Reese Ross. This year the Utes welcome back
Lani White who played at Utah for her freshman and sophomore seasons. White spent her junior season at Virginia Tech but has returned to finish her collegiate career where she started it all, as a Ute. The Utes welcome one true transfer in
Kamryn Mafua and four freshmen in
LA Sneed,
Ella Todd,
Avery Hjelmstad and
Evelina Otto.
THE KEY IS WILKE
Maty Wilke is Utah's top returner. Wilke is shooting 44.4% from the field, 45.7% from three and 100% from the line while averaging 13.0 points per game. She's averaging 2.2 rebounds and has 10 assists so far this season. Wilke has 944 total points in her collegiate career and is just 56 points away from the exclusive 1,000 point club. She's currently ranked No. 21 in the NCAA in made three pointers this season with 16.
OFF THE BENCH
Utah is averaging 22.6 bench points per game. Of Utah's 363 total points scored on the season, 113 have been scored from off the bench (31.1%). Avery Hjelmstad is leading the Utes off the bench with her 7.4 points per game. LA Sneed has made a statement coming in off the bench while leading the team in assists with 21 total on the season. Utah's bench has outscored the opponents bench 113-77 so far this season. The Utes are undefeated this season (3-0) when the bench scores 30 or more points.
HEAD COACH GAVIN PETERSEN
Petersen enters his second season and first full season as head coach. He was named the head coach of the Utah women's basketball team on Nov. 19, 2024 just four games into the 2024-25 season. He has a 22-9 record in his career. Petersen became the fastest coach in program history to get a Top-10 victory when he led the Utes to a 78-67 win over No. 3 Notre
Dame (11/30/24). He brings 23 seasons of college coaching experience to the role, he is in his 11th season overall with the Utes and spent the previous five years as associate head coach under Lynne Roberts.
Petersen has been a part of the staff that has led the Utes to seven postseason appearances—including four NCAA tournaments and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen—and five 20-win seasons, as well as regular appearances in the AP Top 25.
SCOUTING UConn
No. 1 UConn is the current reigning national champion after posting a 37-3 record on the 2024-25 season. The Huskies have a 5-0 record so far on the season and are coming off a 72-69 win over No. 9 Michigan. UConn is led by head coach Geno Auriemma who is in his 41st season at the helm of the Huskies. He has a 1,251-165 overall record. UConn is averaging 87.0 points per game through their first four games while allowing opponents to score 60.2 points per game. The Huskies are shooting 47.8% from the field, 33.3 from three, and 87.8% from the free-throw line across their first five games. On the glass, UConn is averaging 43.0 rebounds per game, compared to opponents' 34.8 boards per game. UConn has two players averaging double figures over their first five games: Azzi Fudd (20.4), and Sarah Strong (19.6). Azzi Fudd leads the team in scoring at 20.4 points per game, shooting 46.8% from the field , 50.0% from three and 100.0% from the line, while adding 3.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game
