SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team fell in game two of its series vs. Arizona State on Saturday night by a 7-3 score at Smith's Ballpark. Utah now posts a 13-12 overall record (2-6 Big 12) as they head into the series finale against the Sun Devils on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Jack Kleveno went 2-for-3 on the night from the nine-hole, including a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth inning. Core Jackson and Cameron Gurney each went 2-for-5, contributing to Utah's seven hits of the night. Jackson extended his hitting streak to eight streak games.
Dylan Gazaway dealt 5.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen, holding the Sun Devils to five hits on and three walks while striking out five. He relieved Merit Jones (2-3) who received the loss for Utah.
Utah saw a slow start through three innings, as the Sun Devils put up a 7-1 edge on the Utes. The Utah defense was plagued by four errors which led to three unearned runs throughout the game.
The Utes kept their composure in the fourth inning, shutting down a bases-loaded situation for Arizona State. Gazaway fielded a grounder back to the mound and started a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning.
Jackson's leadoff double in the fifth inning created some momentum for the Utes. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, before Tyler Quinn brought him in on an RBI ground out. Kaden Carpenter was hit by a pitch and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Gurney then doubled down the third base line to bring around Carpenter, closing the deficit to 7-3.
The next few innings moved along pretty quickly; Gazaway retired ASU in order in the seventh, while also working around a double in the sixth and a walk in the eighth.
Mateus Conaway came into the ninth inning with two outs to relieve Gazaway, retiring the lone batter he faced.
