LAWRENCE, Kan. – After trailing at halftime the Utah women's basketball team surged in the third quarter to snag a 62-59 win over Kansas in the historic Allen Fieldhouse Wednesday afternoon.
Utah is now 12-4 overall on the season and sit at 3-1 in Big 12 play. The Utes have won nine out of the last 10 games. Utah was led by
Lani White's 17 points and
Reese Ross' 11 points and nine rebounds.
GAME SUMMARY
Kansas started the game off with momentum and maintained the lead for the majority of the initial quarter of play. The Jayhawks went on a 9-2 run to end the first quarter with an 18-10 lead over the Utes.
Utah kicked it into gear in the second quarter and went on a 12-2 run to tie the game up at 22-22. The first half finished out in favor of Kansas with a 28-26 score.
The Utes started the second half with some momentum thanks to a 7-0 run to take back the lead. Utah never trailed the remainder of the quarter controlling the pace.
LA Sneed hit a three pointer with one second remaining in the quarter to give Utah a 50-46 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
To start the fourth quarter, Utah hit back-to-back three pointers, one from
Grace Foster and another from
Maty Wilke. The Utes continued to push and pulled out for their largest lead of the game with a 59-48 score. Kansas made a surge at the end going on a 9-0 run to bring the score within three points however, Utah was able to hold out and pulled out the 62-59 win over Kansas.
LEADERS
Utah had three Utes score in double figures and were led by senior
Lani White's 17 points.
Reese Ross contributed 11 points while
Chyra Evans added 10. Sneed added nine points for Utah with all nine coming from beyond the arc.
Ross led the Utes in rebounding with nine boards on the night. Meanwhile, Evans and
Brooke Walker each added six boards.
LA Sneed and Walker each had four assists to help out Utah's offensive efforts.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 41.4% from the field while Kansas shot 41.1%. Utah went 32.1% from three, knocking down 9-of-28, while Kansas shot 18.8%, making 3-of-16. At the free-throw line, Kansas shot 71.4% going 10-of-14, while Utah finished at 50%, converting 5-of-10.
Utah had 17 assists to Kansas' 13. The Utes outrebounded the Jayhawks 42-30. Utah's bench put up 14 points while Kansas' bench only had four.
UP NEXT
The Utes will stay on the road to take on Kansas State Jan. 10. Utah will return home Jan. 14 to take on Baylor at 7 p.m. before heading back on the road to take on Houston.
