SALT LAKE CITY – In a high scoring affair, the Utes came away victorious in today's exhibition game, defeating the Westminster Griffins 118-80 in front of 5,009 fans.
The game was Utah's annual "Future Scholar's Field Trip Day" with over 3,300 students and teachers from local elementary schools visiting the campus. Prior to the game, the students got to trick-or-treat on the concourse of the Huntsman with Utah student-athletes before taking in the exciting game.
Despite the slow start, Utah's high-tempo style of play quickly became evident. The Utes finished the game shooting 60-percent from the floor (44-of-73) and 48-percent from the three (14-of-29) with all 10 players scoring four or more points.
"Westminster did a heck of a job," head coach Lynne Roberts said. " They are so well coached. They came in here fearless and I have so much respect for that. They are a good team. Anytime a player like Denise Gonzalez can come in and play like that, I respect that. They did a great job and so that was fun to play against. They are a very good program and they gave us a run for our money."
The Utes were led by two 20-point scorers in senior Megan Huff and true freshman Dre'Una Edwards. Edwards shot 76-percent from the floor (10-of-13), adding six rebounds and four blocks. Huff was u-for-12 from the field, including going 3-for-3 from the free throw line, also recording four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
"I think we are getting there and we are on pace," Roberts said. "There are a lot of things we can take out of this game as a positive. We shot the ball great, the assists were there, but I think we can improve defensively. Now it is real. We have a week to prep for Nevada and they are going to be tough."
Dru Gylten was tremendous in her first outing as a Ute, nearing a double-double with nine points and a game-high 16 assists. The exhibition game does not count toward school records, but Gylten's assist total was one higher than the current single-game assist record of 15 that was set in 1981.
Daneesha Provo was Utah's second leading scorer in the game with 15 points while Jordan Cruz and Andrea Torres chipped in 12 points each. Kiana Moore put up a strong game with nine points and four points while Erika Bean (9 points), Niyah Becker (8 points) and Sarah Porter (4 points) also added to the 100-plus point outing for the Utes.
The Utes officially tip off the 2018-19 season on the road when they open their season at Nevada on Nov. 7. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. MT tip in Reno.
