TUSCON, Ariz. – The University of Utah women's basketball team shot just 30-percent from the floor in its 66-55 loss at Arizona tonight, falling to 18-6 overall and 7-6 in Pac-12 play.Â
Utah was just 19-of-64 from the floor against the Wildcats, its lowest shooting percentage this season. The Utes were able to take care of the ball with only 10 turnovers, but were out-rebounded and out-scored in the paint despite
Dre'Una Edwards putting up a team-high 21 points.Â
The Las Vegas, Nev., native was 8-of-17 from the floor for her second straight 20-point game, also pulling in 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman
Andrea Torres added nine points with
Erika Bean contributing eight rebounds, five assists and a career-high tying five steals.Â
"I thought defensively we did what we needed to do to win, but offensively we just couldn't make shots," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "The consistency that has been there all season, wasn't there today. It is hard to win on the road shooting 30-percent, it is impossible. We didn't turn it over, we rebounded well and I thought we got good looks, we just didn't have it offensively. We didn't make shots."
The Utes jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter on a beautiful three-pointer from Torres despite the Utes only shooting 36-percent in the quarter, but the lead wouldn't last as scoring droughts started to cause problems. Arizona was able to take a one-point lead with less than a minute to go, but free throws from
Megan Huff and a late layup from Edwards gave Utah a three-point lead heading into the second quarter.Â
The shooting woes continued for the Utes in the second quarter, allowing Arizona to take the lead twice in the quarter, with the second giving them the advantage for the remainder of the quarter. Utah shot just 25-percent in the entire first half and only scored five points in the second quarter with Arizona holding them scoreless for the final 2:56 of the quarter to take a 27-22 lead into halftime.Â
Arizona led by as many as eight points early in the third quarter, but Utah's offense gained some momentum on a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Torres to make it a one-point game with 6:55 on the clock. The Wildcats were able to jump out to a nine-point lead with less than three minutes on the clock, but the Utes continued to fight, going on another 7-0 run to cut it to two with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Utes were only able to shoot 23-percent from the floor in the fourth with Arizona taking an eight-point lead with 2:31 remaining.
Kiana Moore made it a six-point game with less than two minutes to go, but Arizona scored five unanswered points to end the game, taking its 11-point win at home.Â
Utah will look to end its losing streak on Sunday against No. 19 Arizona State in Tempe. The game is set for a 2 p.m. MT tip on Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Arizona. Â
