SPRING PRACTICES
The Utes return to the gridiron this spring with 15 total practices set to take place at the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center and Rice-Eccles Stadium. Practices are closed to the public.
THE UTAH MAN
Head coach Kyle Whittingham will be entering his 20th season at the helm in 2024, holding an overall record of 162-79. Including his 11 seasons as an assistant coach for the Utes, Whittingham has contributed to more victories (247) than any coach in program history.
He has coached in 367 total games at Utah and 241 as the head coach with the Utes finishing with a winning record in 17 of his 19 years, including in 10 straight. Leading Utah into a new era this season, Whittingham coached the Utes to two Pac-12 Championships along with at least a share of the Pac-12 South title four times before divisions were dissolved.
THE RETURNERS
Utah returns 18 total starters to the field this spring, headlined by the dynamic duo of Rising and Kuithe on offense. Kuithe is a three-time All-Pac-12 tight end with 148 career receptions for 1,882 yards (16 TDs) with QB1 coming back as a two-time All-Pac-12 selection, tying for fifth all-time at Utah in career wins (18-6).
The tradition of the O-Block continues to churn out NFL talent, and keep depth at the same time with starters Spencer Fano, Jaren Kump, Kolinu'u Faaiu and Michael Mokofisi all coming back for 2024. They'll be blocking for seasoned veterans in Bernard and Glover along with Rising, who will be looking to link up with new and old weapons that include Landen King, Munir McClain and Money Parks.
On defense, the front seven will be stacked once again with Van Fillinger, Logan Fano, O'Toole, Tanuvasa and Tafuna all returning on the defensive line along with Barton, Reid and Damuni at linebacker. Damuni and Reid combined for 154 total tackles in 2023 with Damuni leading the team with 87.0 (2.5 TFL).
In the secondary, All-Pac-12 cornerback Vaughn started every game last season, finishing fourth on the team in total tackles (53.0) while also leading the squad in pass breakups with six. Tao Johnson also had a breakout year in 2023 after switching to nickel from wide receiver, starting 12 games with 33 tackles and five pass breakups.
The Utes also bring back starting specialists in punter Jack Bouwmeester, kicker Cole Becker and snapper JT Greep. Becker was 15-of-18 on field goals and 28-of-28 on PATs in 2023 with Bouwmeester earning All-Pac-12 first-team honors after leading the Pac-12 with 45.4 yards per punt.
